History and population

The village of Unterweißau was first mentioned in a document between 1122 and 1140 as Wizauwa . The place name is probably derived from the white Au (Erlenau). Later name spellings included Wizzowe, Weizzaw, Weissaw and Weyssau. In the 18th century the place consisted of only six buildings. These were the Lenbauer farms, formerly also Lenzbauern- or Rutzingergut (Unterweißau 1), Hausl (Unterweißau 5), Petermichl, formerly also Petermühlgut (Unterweißau 6), Seyerl (Unterweißau 8), Anderl (Unterweißau 9) and Tobias (Unterweißau 11) . However, the Seyerl and Anderl farms no longer exist today.

In Unterweißau in 1869 50 people lived in eleven houses. In 1910 there were 51 residents in nine houses. All residents of the village were of the Catholic faith.
