Much smoke about nothing (original title: Up in Smoke ) is an American stoner movie from 1978. Due to its portrayal of the lifestyle of the hippie era , the film soon became a cult film . In 1980 the film More Smoke for Nothing at All followed , and in 1981 Cheech & Chong's hot dreams .

action

Cheech and Chong get to know each other when Chong has separated from his stuffy parents and Cheech drives his car on the highway. Since the radiator of a Rolls-Royce is built into Chong's VW Beetle and he stays where it is, he is disguised as a woman and waits for someone to take him away.

Cheech stops and lets Chong get in. Cheech is startled when he realizes that he has taken a man in disguise. Soon the two of them are smoking a joint and are so high that they stand by the side of the road and don't realize they are no longer driving.

After discovering this, Chong gives Cheech a couple of LSD pills, mistaking them for cannabis overdose pills, and says, "Shit, man, no one has ever taken that much of this stuff before." Shortly afterwards, they notice that the police park directly behind them, whereupon Chong swallows all the pills he has with him.

The next day Cheech Chong introduces his band, which Chong joins as a drummer. In search of marijuana , the two drive to Cheech's cousin Strawberry, who takes Cheech to get something. Chong stays in Strawberry's house. There he spills, among other things, Ajax cleaning powder, which is mistaken for cocaine by a hippie girl and consumed immediately. Then there is a huge party in the house with other hippies and a lot of drugs . However the house is being shadowed by Sergeant Stedenko.

During her motorcycle ride through the neighborhood, Cheech notices that the area is being watched by police. Strawberry, who believes he is in Vietnam, immediately jumps off, while Cheech, sitting in the sidecar, crashes into a phone booth and immediately calls Chong to warn him. This escaped the raid more by chance, while all other party participants were arrested.

When the band met again, there was another raid, in which all Mexican people in the house were arrested and deported across the border. They deliberately informed the immigration authorities about their illegal stay, as they are all invited to a wedding in Mexico and want to save travel expenses by deporting them. Usually they would have nothing to fear. But since Chong doesn't seem to have a green card , they are in Mexico in the next scene.

In Mexico they go to a large upholstery factory. This is a barely camouflaged marijuana processing plant, which the two protagonists missed because Cheech has severe diarrhea. To get back to the USA , the two drive a van across the border, not realizing that the body is made of pressed marijuana. By chance they make it across the border when Chong accidentally throws a joint into the car of the nuns and they are arrested instead of the protagonists.

Shortly after the border, the two take a break where they meet Stedenko, but this has no consequences because he doesn't know them. In this parking lot, someone also uses the car as a lighter for his match, which causes the car to start smoking.

After the two drove on, the police notice their mistake and start chasing the van. The two inmates do not notice this and take two young, attractive women as hitchhikers. The two tell them about a band competition. Cheech and Chong decide without further ado to get their boys together and take part in the competition. However, they were lucky that Stedenko and his men eliminated themselves by accident. Another stroke of luck is that they are stopped by a patrol officer because their car is smoking, but the police officer is no longer able to control them because of the inhaled smoke.

Arriving at the competition, Stedenko has his men dress up as members of a religious group and try to get into the building while Cheech texts the song for the band's performance. Stedenko finally finds the car he is looking for, but does not notice that it has finally caught fire. As a result, he and his men get high , and the smoke enters the club's ventilation system. Then the audience is totally foggy and drugged, which benefits the rather moderate appearance of the boys and makes them the blast of the evening.

The next day, Cheech and Chong decide to work more seriously as musicians and smoke a final joint.
