geography

Uthweiler is located in the middle of the Pleiser hill country east of the Siebengebirge , on both sides of the Pleisbach , which here the Pleistal at its deepest notch at 111  m above sea level. NN . The village extends together with the immediately northwest adjoining Freckwinkel as a street village along the state road 143 ( Aegidienberg - Oberpleis - Niederpleis - Troisdorf ).

history

In 859 Uthweiler was first mentioned as Utwilere when two noblemen donated a farm to the St. Cassius monastery in Bonn , today's Bönnschenhof in the neighboring Wahlfeld . In the 8th century, the area was systematically cleared and made usable for agriculture. The local lords sat in Oberpleis and were subordinate to the Archbishop of Cologne . Throughout the Middle Ages there were only a few farmsteads on the banks of the Pleisbach, in the 19th century the place had around 100 inhabitants. In addition to agriculture, the main source of income for the population was two quarries, on Buchholzer Berg and Uthweiler Hardt, the “Satisfaction” lignite mine on Kohlberg, and some clay pits. Coal mining ended in 1860, and a few years later a large tree nursery in neighboring Jüngsfeld gave many Uthweilers work. The power supply started around 1900; from 1889 an independent newspaper , the General-Anzeiger from Bonn, was delivered to the town. The quarries were shut down around 1920. Since 1893, the Niederpleis - Herresbach bei Oberpleis small train line (the so-called Pleistalbahn (see also Bröltalbahn )) has crossed the village and provided the transport of goods and people. The railway was still in operation until the 1950s. In the station building, which is now used as a private residence, there were guest rooms that are even said to have been used by summer vacationers from Berlin .

In 1929 the Uthweiler volunteer fire brigade was founded. Administratively, the village was divided since 948, namely by the Blankenbach flowing down from Söven , which flows into the Pleisbach in the middle of the village . The northern part of Uthweiler with the train station belonged to the municipality of Stieldorf , the southern part to the municipality of Oberpleis . Until the local reorganization in 1969, these communities were combined in the Oberpleis office, but the almost without exception Catholic population was divided into "Steeldkörper Uthwieler" and "Pleeser Uthwieler" by belonging to the respective parish .

In 1879 a chapel was built in the Oberpleis part of the village , which was enlarged in 1943. In its place in 1967/68, according to plans by the archdiocesan master builder Wilhelm Schlombs, the subsidiary church of St. Michael was built, with Mladen Rubčić taking over the construction and management . The service has been regularly provided by the Benedictine Fathers of the Siegburg Abbey since 1942 . In the Stieldorfer part, the St. Antonius chapel was built in 1886 , which was dismantled in 1976 and rebuilt in the neighboring Wahlfeld through private initiative. Other historical buildings in Uthweiler are the miller's house from the middle of the 18th century and the former Stieldorfer schoolhouse from 1730, which was transferred to the town center in 1828 (Pfarrer-Wichert-Straße 8).

The place has grown continuously after 1950, the building stock has increased considerably. Siegburger Strasse, Pfarrer-Wichert-Strasse and Strasse Am Hang, the town's three main axes running parallel, hardly have any vacant lots. The side streets An der Hofwiese and Schillingstraße were also densely built up.

Infrastructure

Uthweiler is crossed in its north-south axis by Landstrasse 143 (Siegburger Strasse), which connects all places in the Pleistal. The motorways 3 ( Siebengebirge junction ) and 560 (Niederpleis junction) can be reached quickly . In the local public transport, Uthweiler is served by the Rhein-Sieg-Verkehrsgesellschaft with several bus lines, which are used in loose intervals, but only sporadically in the evening hours. The closest train station is in Hennef .

Due to the immediate vicinity of Oberpleis, there are hardly any shops in Uthweiler for everyday needs. Public institutions are the kindergarten and the fire station built in 1964 by the volunteer fire brigade on Siegburger Strasse. In the 1990s, Germany's first children's hotel was opened for a short time in Uthweiler in the house at Pfarrer-Wichert-Strasse 60.
