Václav Pichl (also Wenzel Pichl; born September 25, 1741 in Bechyně , Bohemia , † January 23, 1805 in Vienna , Austria ) was a Bohemian violinist , composer and music director .

Life

He began his first musical training in Bechyně with the teacher Jan Pokorny . In the period from 1752 to 1758 he worked as a singer at the Jesuit school in Březnice . Later he was a violinist at the Jesuit Seminary of St. Vaclav in Prague and studied philosophy , theology and law at the Karl Ferdinand University . In 1762 he was employed as first violinist at the Teyn Church while studying counterpoint with the organist Josef Seger . In 1765 he was employed by the composer Carl Ditters von Dittersdorf as a violinist for the private orchestra of Bishop Adam Patachich in Großwardein , today's Oradea in Romania . The orchestra disbanded in 1769, however, whereupon Pichl became Kapellmeister of Count Ludwig Hartig in Prague. As early as 1770 he joined the orchestra of the Kärntnertor Theater in Vienna as a violinist . In 1775 he was appointed Kapellmeister to Archduke Ferdinand Karl , the Austrian governor of Milan and the second youngest son of Empress Maria Theresa , where he worked for around twenty years. From 1790 to 1796 he was music director of the opera in Monza and returned to Vienna when the French Italian army invaded . Here he suffered a fatal stroke on January 23, 1805 when he was playing a violin concerto in the Lobkowitz Palace .

Pichl composed 20 operas, 30 solo concerts, 20 masses, 89 symphonies, many of which have been lost, and numerous chamber music works, including 148 pieces for the rare baryton instrument commissioned by Prince Nikolaus I Joseph Esterházy de Galantha in Eisenstadt .
