Valentin Stanič

Valentin Stanič , own name: Valentin Stanig (born February 12, 1774 in Bodrež near Kanal ob Soči ; † April 29, 1847 in Gorizia , coastal country ) was an Austrian clergyman , teacher , researcher, humanist and mountaineer .

Life

Valentin Stanič was born into a Slovenian farming family. He attended high school in Klagenfurt , switched to the Academic High School in Salzburg in 1793 and studied philosophy and theology at the Benedictine University of Salzburg from 1798 to 1802 and was ordained a priest in 1802 . After years of pastoral work in Banjsice and Rocin, he went to Gorizia on the order of Bishop Jozef Balant , where he became cathedral chapter . Valentin Stanič achieved great merit through the introduction of the smallpox vaccination, the promotion of the Slovene language and the teaching of the deaf and mute, as well as during the famine of 1816/17 in the Canal Valley . In 1845 he joined the association against cruelty to animals in Munich and in the following year founded a comparable institution in Gorizia. He died here on April 29, 1847.

His first ascent of the Watzmann in August 1800 and the Hohen Göll on September 4, 1800 in the nearby Berchtesgaden Alps also took place during the Salzburg period . Stanič also took part in the successful expedition aimed at the first ascent of the Grossglockner in 1800 , he made measurements of Heiligenblut for his professor Ulrich Schiegg (who was with the climbing team). Just one day after the first to climb, he was the first tourist on July 29, 1800, on this highest peak in the Hohe Tauern . In 1808 he stood on the peaks of Triglav and Mangart in the Julian Alps . In the mountains he made observations with a barometer and thermometer .

On the occasion of the celebrations for the 200th anniversary of the first ascent of the Watzmann, a memorial plaque for Valentin Stanič was unveiled on July 3, 1999 on the Watzmannhaus . The year 1799 is not an oversight, as in alpine literature both the year 1799 and 1800 are mentioned as the year of the first ascent. The year 1800 is probably the correct one, as Stanič himself stated that he climbed the Watzmann after the Grossglockner, his correspondence confirms this.

Stanigplatz in the Munich district of Hasenbergl is named after him.
