The VARIOmobil automotive GmbH (proper spelling VARIOmobil) is a 1983 Manufacturer of custom-made recreational vehicles and special vehicles for domestic and commercial use based in Bohmte in the district of Osnabrück , Lower Saxony .

history

In 1981, in the Lower Saxony Rieste the Vario Caravan GmbH . In 1983, the businessman Bernhard Rothgänger from Bohmte joined the company and in April of the same year took over the sole management. He subsequently expanded the business area and changed the company name to Variomobil Fahrzeugbau GmbH . In August 1984, Bernhard Rothgänger took over the company as the sole shareholder and in September relocated the company headquarters to the Bohmte am Teichgraben 13 industrial area. There, self-supporting vehicle bodies were initially manufactured and mounted on all - terrain pickups , vans and light trucks. The product range comprised add-on cabins, empty cabins, box bodies, partially integrated and fully integrated vehicles.

From 1985 the company manufactured semi-trailers and alcoves for the Mercedes-Benz LK . The first self-developed front made of glass fiber reinforced plastic followed in 1986 in the VARIO Integral . The brand name "Variomobil" was registered in 1987 at the German Patent and Trademark Office in Munich. From 1988 Variomobil became a training company .

The first VARIO Star was built on an MB 410 chassis in 1989 and presented to the public at the leading caravanning trade fair in Essen . From 1990, integrated car garages were also offered for models from 9 m vehicle length. In 1994 the company moved to its current location in Bohmte and built a new building there with 36,000 m² of open space and 6,000 m² of production area. A modern paint shop for vehicles up to 20 m in length and a motorhome parking space were created.

In 1998 the cooperation with the University of Applied Sciences Osnabrück began on various innovation promotion projects . As part of diploma theses , a special car loading ramp for motorhomes with a cantilever sliding platform, seat and belt anchors and a special three-point belt for the captains chair in motorhomes were developed and made ready for series production between 1999 and 2012 .

In 1999 the company halls and the carpentry shop were expanded with their own furniture paint shop. From 2002 Variomobiles were offered with the so-called slide-out technology (enlargement of the vehicle area by up to three retractable living area bay windows ). In 2007, Frank Mix, nephew of the company founder, was appointed further managing director of the family company . A rolling hangar for a helicopter as an escort vehicle was designed in 2008 and presented at the Caravan Salon in Düsseldorf . In the same year, the integrated VARIO Perfect 1200 Platinum motorhome was presented at the Millionaire Fair luxury goods fair in Munich . The vehicle with a gross vehicle weight of 25 tons, three axles, three retractable bay windows and a car garage was handcrafted in 6,500 hours and represented the high point of vehicle development at Variomobil at the time.

In the following years the product range was expanded to include commercial special vehicles. In 2014 the VARIO Business was presented at the International Motor Show (IAA) in Hanover . In the same year, an all -terrain motorhome with all-wheel drive was also developed.

Companies

The company produces high-priced motorhomes in a factory design as well as special vehicles, for example for the German navy , broadcasters, banks and expeditions. The vehicle production takes place as individual production by hand with a high level of vertical integration and individualization . Only the chassis , engines and technical equipment come from suppliers. The multi-stage produced vehicles of the body builder are used worldwide.

Trivia

  • In the episode Trucks of DMAX telecast The modelers - the duel was rebuilt a Vario alcove 1,200 in November, 2015. This model emerged as the winner.
