Election to the state assembly in Bavaria in 1946
The election for the constituent state assembly took place in Bavaria on June 30, 1946. On the same day, the election for the Constituent State Assembly of Württemberg-Baden took place. These two were the first elections for a supra-municipal body in Germany after the Second World War . The turnout in Bavaria was 72.1%.
prehistory
Bavaria was completely occupied by US troops at the end of April 1945. On May 28, 1945, the US Military Government (" OMGUS ") appointed Fritz Schäffer Provisional Prime Minister. On September 19, Bavaria was officially restored as a state. On September 28th, Schäffer was replaced by the Social Democrat Wilhelm Hoegner .
On February 8, 1946, US General Lucius D. Clay ordered a constitution for Bavaria to be drawn up. This constitution first took place in a provisional committee, where a first draft was developed. The final decision should be made by an elected assembly. The election for this took place on June 30, 1946.
After the constitution was passed, the first regular state elections and a referendum on the new constitution took place on December 1, 1946 .
