Veronika Veit (artist)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Veronika Veit (* 1968 in Munich ) is a German artist . Her work includes sculptures , installations, animations , short films and photographs . In 2006 she was awarded the Bavarian State Prize for Fine Arts .

Artistic career

Veit studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich from 1989 to 1995. For her objects, sculptures and installations, some of which she combines with computer animation and sound effects, she was awarded the Bavarian State Prize for Fine Arts in 2006. She lives and works in Munich.

While Veit dealt with everyday objects in her earlier works and posed the art-historical question of the relationship between image and object, she focuses on people in her new large-format and multimedia installations. Veronika Veit traces out similarities and differences, insecurities, poses or simply the special peculiarities of people, which she vividly expresses in her sculptures (on average approx. 100 cm high).

Veronika Veit has made several video films since 2010. The stories told are amusing and entertaining at first, but dangerous, violent interactions between people are always lurking.

The video work Die Faust (2010) shows a supposed idyll and its disturbance: Accompanied by the sounds of a piano etude, a mother holds strands of gray wool in a living room in the 1960s, the daughter winds the thread into a neat ball. The table is set for coffee. Suddenly a male fist hits the table from the left and a live trout jumps around between the dishes. The mother puts it in the coffee pot, the wool continues to be unwound. But the scene repeats itself - the fish cannot be removed from view. Then the mother hits the table with her fist; and this time she bites off the fish's head, chews it up in disgust, and swallows it. She puts the body of the fish in the coffee pot. The girl looks on, disturbed, and ends up bringing her mother a small mirror without being asked. Obviously, he knows that the mother now wants to trace her lips, which suggests that the child is not experiencing such a scene for the first time. The film was shown in the summer of 2016 at the Five Lakes Film Festival in the program Das Fremde im Eigenen .

In Bessere Zeiten (2015) , the viewer first sees a construction trailer furnished with tables and armchairs in front of them, into which they can look. You see a video recording of two men who used to sit and wait in the car. As their absurd conversation shows, their contact with the outside world has long been broken off. Veit, according to the jury for the award for fine arts of the state capital Munich , “with the installation alludes to the insecurity and irrational fears of many people about catastrophes, but at the same time creates a situation of discomfort for outsiders, which not least leads to critical reflection initiates one's own attitude towards currently relevant social motives ”.

The multimedia installation “Im Bunker” from 2017 deals with the same topic. A bunker-like, khaki-colored body was set up in front of the Gasteig . A screen showing a film is installed in a recess. The everyday life of a family of four can be seen in the bunker.
