About this picture

In the administrative community Südliche Altmark in the Altmarkkreis Salzwedel in the northwest of the state of Saxony-Anhalt 18 communities were united. The seat, but not a member of the administrative community, was the town of Gardelegen .

The administrative community was created on January 1, 2005 from the merger of the dissolved administrative community Gardelegen-Land (16 communities) and the also dissolved administrative community Mieste (10 communities).

On July 1, 2009, the communities of Algenstedt and Schenkenhorst were incorporated into the town of Gardelegen. The former member communities Jeseritz, Potzehne, Roxförde, Wannefeld, Wiepke and Zichtau were also eliminated on January 1, 2010 through incorporation into Gardelegen.

The administrative community Südliche Altmark was dissolved by a resolution of the state parliament on January 1, 2011 and the municipalities incorporated into the Hanseatic city of Gardelegen , making it the third largest municipality in Germany in terms of area.
