Via Alpina (Switzerland)
The Via Alpina in Switzerland (also known as the Alpine Pass Route until 2008 ) is a strenuous trekking route through the Swiss Alps from east (Vaduz) to west (Montreux on Lake Geneva).
Route and time required
The Via Alpina is hiking route 1 in Switzerland . Your first fifteen stages are part of the Via Alpina long-distance route system across the Alps (from Vaduz to Adelboden: green route; from Adelboden to Lenk: red route). The stages from Meiringen to Lenk also coincide with the Hintere Gasse long-distance trail .
340 kilometers of route, 19 passes, and 18,000 vertical meters are to be conquered. Many passes are known: Foopass, Richetlipass, Klausenpass, Surenenpass, Grosse and Kleine Scheidegg, Sefinenfurgge, Hohtürli, Bunderchrinde, Hahnenmoospass, Trüttlisbergpass, Col des Mosses, others to discover anew. Some of these crossings (e.g. Sefinenfurgge, Hohtürli) lead over exposed areas and in some cases steep scree slopes have to be crossed. Here and there you can expect snowfields well into summer, which is why you should always be well informed.
Allow at least two weeks for the entire long-distance hike, bad weather can force unwanted breaks. Of course, the alpine pass route can be divided into sections or made easier by using public transport.
