Hydrology and water quality
The mostly brownish water of the Vire is indicated by Lumina Tech as slightly alkaline with a pH value of 8.31. The water is relatively cloudy, with a Secchi lens a depth of view of 12 cm was determined.
Similar to the larger Orne river , the catchment area of the Vire is also subject to a maritime climate. This is expressed by low water levels. The flow rate in August is only 2.34 m³ / s, in contrast to the annual average of 12.6 m³ / s. However, this does not prevent the occasional occurrence of floods. Occasionally catastrophic floods occur, such as in 1843, when numerous thunderstorms caused the river in Saint-Lô to overflow, flooding lower-lying areas.
shipping
Just below Saint-Fromond , the former canal Canal de Vire et Taute branches off to the left , which connects the rivers Vire and Taute .
