Wrestling career

World Championship Wrestling (1988-1989)

Runnels got into wrestling through his father Dusty Rhodes . He made his debut in the World Championship Wrestling in 1988 . There he got the name Dustin Rhodes and formed a short-lived team with Kendall Windham , which was called the Texas Broncos . Runnels' first WCW run only lasted a few months when he left his doctorate two months after his father.

World Wrestling Federation (1990-1991)

In 1990 Runnels appeared next to his father for the first time for the then World Wrestling Federation . Among other things, he played a fight with his father against "The Million Dollar Man" Ted DiBiase and Virgil at the Royal Rumble .

Return to the WCW (1991–1995)

After only a year he left the WWF and signed a contract with World Championship Wrestling , where he celebrated his return in February 1991. In October 1992 Runnels and his partner Barry Windham won the WCW World Tag Team Championship together . After they had to give up the title, both were involved in a feud program against each other.

In January 1993, Runnels was allowed to hold the WCW US title . He finally had to lose the title to Steve Austin in December 1993 .

In 1995, Runnels contract was not renewed. It was now written from the storyline after a blading occurred in a match against Barry Darsow despite a ban on the part of the WCW .

Return to WWF (1995–1999)

Runnels signed again with the WWF. From September 1995 he was employed as Goldust at the WWF . His gimmick corresponded to a sexually ambiguous movie star. He wore a black and gold full body suit in the ring and had face paint in the same colors. Runnels became involved in a feud program with Razor Ramon that culminated in Runnels winning the WWF Intercontinental Championship . He had to surrender this title to Ahmed Johnson on June 23, 1996.

After his storyline-like exposure in May 1998, Runnels was involved in various feud programs under his old WCW name. The Goldust character was only reactivated in October of that year . Before his release, he was briefly involved as IC champion in 1999. After submitting the title, he signed again with WCW.

Second return to WCW (1999–2001)

In 1999 Runnels returned to World Championship Wrestling. There he was under the name “The American Nightmare” Dustin Rhodes  - a reference to his father's nickname (“The American Dream”) - active.

Second return to WWE (2002-2003)

In January 2002, Runnels returned to WWE, where he was given his Goldust gimmick again. He was placed in a feud program with Rob Van Dam and that was completed by Runnels with receipt of the WWF Hardcore title . In March 2002 the World Wrestling Federation was renamed World Wrestling Entertainment and into two brands, RAW and SmackDown! , divided. Runnels was then for the RAW roster active and formed a team with Booker .

In 2002, after Booker T left the reactivated New World Order , the two had a feud program with it. At Armageddon 2002 they both won the World Tag Team title . In 2003 the team separated again. After that, Runnels rarely appeared and was fired in December.

Total Nonstop Action Wrestling (2004-2005)

On February 4, 2004, Runnels made his debut in Total Nonstop Action Wrestling as Dustin Rhodes . There he was allowed to feud with Jeff Jarrett for the NWA World Heavyweight Championship , but without winning it. In April 2005, his contract with TNA expired and was not renewed.

Third return to the WWE (2005-2006)

On October 31, 2005, Runnels returned to the WWE again. As of January 2006, he was written in a team with Snitsky in a feud program against Lance Cade and Trevor Murdoch . On June 14, 2006, he was released from his current contract.

Return to TNA Wrestling (2007-2008)

From July 2007 Dustin Rhodes appeared again in Total Nonstop Action Wrestling. There he went on as Black Reign (a kind of dark alter ego of Goldust). On various occasions Runnels switched between the gimmicks of Dustin Rhodes and Black Reign during his feud programs .

At the end of July 2008 it was announced that TNA and Runnels were going their separate ways. Runnels did not have a permanent contract, but received a fee for his TNA appearances . After his TNA dismissal, he competed in various independent leagues.

Fourth return to WWE (2008-2019)

Since October 2008 Runnels has been working again for WWE, where he first appeared on the Monday show RAW. On June 29, 2009 Goldust switched to the Tuesday program ECW . There he feuded with Christian , Tommy Dreamer and Yoshi Tatsu against William Regal , Vladimir Kozlov and Ezekiel Jackson .

After the ECW was discontinued, he went to SmackDown . As part of the WWE Drafts , Runnels came back to RAW on April 26, 2010. From September to November 2010, Runnels appeared at WWE NXT as the coach of the Lithuanian wrestler Aksana , whom he married according to the storyline and thus protected from expulsion.

After an injury in December 2010, he then only appeared sporadically in the shows. In addition, Runnels worked behind the scenes as a backstage producer and trainer of the divas. On May 6, 2012, it was announced that he had been fired due to an incident on SmackDown.

On January 27, 2013, he took part in the corresponding major event in the Royal Rumble Match .

On September 9, 2013, Runnels returned to the WWE. Here he was involved in a feud in which he stood by his brother's side to help him get reinstalled after a lost career match against Randy Orton . On October 14, 2013 he and Cody Rhodes won the WWE Tag Team Championship and lost it to the New Age Outlaws on January 26, 2014 at the Royal Rumble . After his last injury, he was released from his contract in March 2019 at his own request.

All Elite Wrestling (2019-)

In April 2019, Runnels was officially confirmed to be part of the All Elite Wrestling roster. At the first event of All Elite Wrestling Double Or Nothing on May 25, 2019, Runnels, again under the ring name Dustin Rhodes, lost his match against his brother Cody.
