action

The story takes place in the present in a posh Connecticut suburb : the cold-hearted Amanda and the condescending Lily were childhood friends and now meet again as teenagers. Not entirely voluntarily, because Amanda slaughtered her mother's horse and Lily agrees to become her professional friend for a lot of money. This leads to an unequal but genuine friendship. When Lily's rich but cold-hearted stepfather, Mark, threatens to put her in a reformatory instead of the Andover elite school she has dreamed of , she decides to get him out of the way - even though his money enables her and her widowed mother to live a life in luxury. Together with the cool, calculating Amanda, she plans the perfect murder; they try to get the petty criminal Tim to carry out the murder.

The film title Thoroughbred is an English term for a racehorse and means something like “thoroughly bred”. The soundtrack was composed by Erik Friedlander . The film's soundtrack, which includes 17 pieces of music, including contributions from King Harvest , A Tribe Called Red , Tanya Tagaq , The Sweet Hurt and Tanis , was released by Back Lot Music on March 9, 2018.

Age rating and film genre

In the USA, the film received an R rating from the MPAA , which corresponds to a rating of 17 and over. In Germany, the film was approved for people aged 16 and over . The statement of reasons for the release states: “The film takes place in an artificial and unrealistic environment. The focus is on people who act very calculating and seemingly emotionless. The film develops a very intense atmosphere that can be processed by young people aged 16 and over without being overwhelmed. Violence is only hinted at, the unscrupulous behavior of the two protagonists is neither glorified nor advocated. "

Katrin Doerksen from the Tagesspiegel believes that thoroughbreds defy any identification patterns internalized by genre conventions: “The audience is neither afraid of the inscrutable stepfather, nor is it feverish for the future perpetrators. Instead, you soon resigned yourself to not trusting anything or anyone - not the intentions of the characters, and also not your own detective instincts, although at the beginning you believe you have exposed the real villain with every suggestive cut. "The backgrounds of the characters and the degree of their psychopathy ultimately remained as nebulous as the origin of the feeling of permanent threat, Doerksen continued.

Reviews

So far, the film has won over 87 percent of Rotten Tomatoes ' critics . The consensus stated there: "Thoroughbreds juggles with verve between the genres and represents a well-written and refreshingly unpredictable introduction to the genre of teenage thriller."

Olivia Cooke plays Amanda in the film

Erin Whitney of screencrush.com describes Thoroughbreds as a wonderfully twisted thriller and a black comedy that is viciously funny, which the film owes in particular to Olivia Cooke's chilled demeanor.

Frank Schnelle from epd Film says that director Cory Finley has a great visual instinct, he tells stories with a weightless camera, elegant widescreen compositions, soothing slow-motion, and he also knows how to skillfully use Erik Friedlander's dark, experimental music . This creates a cool, oppressive thriller atmosphere from the first minute, in which surprising things can happen at any time. Nevertheless, the promising debut leads to an unsatisfactory finale, so Schnelle.

Antje Wessels explains about the motif of the horses in the film, Amanda loves them and even dreams of a society in which people submit to the noble animals. At the same time she mourned after her time as a rider. Wessels continues: “Theoretically, a thoroughbred is a horse whose breeding history goes back to Arab ancestors. Because such ancestry is seldom written on the forehead of the four-legged friends, in practice the main focus is on the appearance and character of the animals. The mostly very slender, long-legged thoroughbreds, which are mainly used in racing, are on the one hand very frugal and robust, on the other hand they are particularly sensitive and spirited. ”However, Corey Finley's directorial debut is only marginally about horses, says Wessels continues, and instead the German title Thoroughbreds refers much more to the character traits of the two protagonists.
