geology
The limestones of the Malm , from which the forewood is mainly built, form the Hildesheim Jura ridge . Known nationwide have been fossil rich Heersumer layers , the former in a quarry near the town Heersum digested shown.
description
The wooded forewood, which is up to 243 m high with the Knebelberg and in which some streams arise as tributaries from Innerste (directly touching the south) and Fuhse (running a little further to the northeast), is criss-crossed by several hiking and forest trails . There is a telecommunications tower on the Barenberg near Grasdorf and a now dilapidated observation tower on the Ortsberg near Astenbeck .
The federal motorway 7 runs through the forewood approximately in a north-west-south-east direction between the junctions Hildesheim and Derneburg / Salzgitter and the federal road 6 from Hildesheim through Achtum , Uppen and Wendhausen to Heersum . The section Nettlingen - Vorholz - Grasdorf of the federal road 444 runs through the ridge in north-south direction .
