location

The Vorwerk is located in Podemus in the west of the city of Dresden . There it cultivates an area of 310 hectares for agriculture, of which 60 hectares are grassland, 250 hectares of arable land and 11.5 hectares of fruit-growing areas.

It operates organic markets in Dresden , Radebeul , Bautzen , Pirna and Freiberg and a restaurant in Dresden-Klotzsche .

Agriculture and livestock

The Vorwerk organically cultivates a green and arable area of 310 hectares on the plateau around the Zschonergrund . Mainly potatoes are grown on the arable land. The crop rotation is alfalfa , winter wheat , potatoes , sunflowers , triticale , maize and peas or broad beans . It also grows fruit and vegetables on the Briesnitz he Höhe near the Zschonergrundbach . The Vorwerk grows tomatoes, apples, quinces and mini kiwis there, among other things.

It owns pigs in 120 pig fattening places , which are kept in the barn with partially slatted floor and with an outdoor area, 60 dairy cows, which are black and white crossbreeds and are kept in the outdoor climatic pen and grazing, and 40 to 60 young cattle and 10 to 20 calves that are kept in the open barn .

Fattening pigs, cattle and lambs from our own farms or from other farms in the region are slaughtered, prepared and sold in our own butcher's shop or in other markets , for example at Denn's . The Gläserne Molkerei company , which also sells dairy products under its own name in organic markets such as denn's or Bio Company , processes the milk because its own dairy is currently being set up. The Schönborn Hofkäserei uses it to make quark and cheese.

The generation and production takes place on the basis of the Gäa guidelines and the control body is Grünstempel® - Ökoprüfstelle eV under the ecological control number DE-ÖKO-021 .

In the middle ages

The Vorwerk was laid out around 1100. During this time, the diocese of Meissen held the lands in and around Podemus. A Vorwerk is an estate of a castle or fortification. The first written mention of the Vorwerk Podemus dates from 1387 and in 1406 the Vorwerk passed from the Diocese of Meißen to the brothers Krystan and Nickel Pietzsch, who owned it until 1570.

1700-1945

The next mention was in 1745 at the battle of Kesselsdorf , during which the Podemus suburb burned to the ground as a result of the war. In 1793 the new owner JC Rudolph decided to rebuild the old farm building on the foundation walls. The Rudoph family again sold the Vorwerk in 1860 to the Dresdner banker Werner. In 1900 August Probst came into the possession of the Vorwerk through marriage. After his death in 1932 his son Helmut took over the management of the family estate. During the Second World War, the women who remained alone managed the farm, only with the support of a few remaining men from Silesia and the Sudetenland .

In the GDR

After the war, the Probst family maintained their own farms from 1953, despite the levies on large farmers . After the forced collectivization in 1960 the family fled to the FRG ; Until 1990 the LPG managed the Vorwerk under the name "Karl Marx".

As an organic farm

After the LPG was dissolved in 1992, the Probst family returned to the Podemus plant and began to work organically. She also joined the Gäa organic association . In 2001 the first farm shop was opened in Podemus, initially only selling items from our own production. The offer was later expanded. In 2004 a new cowshed was completed and a new milking parlor opened. In the following year the farm shop was rebuilt. Due to growing demand, the construction of the company's own organic butchery began in 2008 and was completed in 2009. In the same year the second organic market was opened on Hüblerstraße in Dresden , and ten more organic markets were added over the next few years. In 2016 the Vorwerk Podemus opened its first organic gastronomy.

offer

In addition to the usual offerings for supermarkets , the Vorwerk offers meat, sausage products, potatoes, vegetables, fruit and juice from its own cultivation or from other organic farms around Dresden. In addition, many things are unpacked to encourage people to use their own packaging. For example, there are so-called “city udders” in some supermarkets, from which you can tap milk from the Podemus farm yourself into a container. The baked goods that are offered there come from regional organic bakers.

Awards

The Vorwerk Podemus received the Saxon Environment Prize in 2006 in the agriculture and forestry category. In 2007 it was recognized by the then Federal Environment Minister Sigmar Gabriel for its commitment to nature conservation in the Zschonergrund as part of the nature conservation farms sponsorship award. In 2016 it won the competition “Animal-friendly and environmentally friendly husbandry” by the Saxon State Ministry for Environment and Agriculture in the category of organic farms. It is also a demonstration company for ecological agriculture and a member of the Saxony Environmental Alliance .
