The 8th stage of the Vuelta a España 2008 on September 7th led over 151 kilometers from Andorra (Escaldes - Engordany) to Salardú / Naut Aran / Pla de Beret. There were two sprint classifications and one mountain classification in the 2nd category and three in the 1st category on the program.
With this stage the "roof of the Vuelta" was reached: The 2070 meter high Puerto de la Bonaigua was the penultimate mountain of today's part of the day. On his climb, David Moncoutié attacked out of a five-man breakaway group and left his companions Sébastien Joly , Christophe Kern , Juan Manuel Gárate and Nikita Jeskow standing. This escape group had formed after 36 kilometers. The favorites for overall victory waited until the last climb and let Andreas Klöden lead them up the mountain at high speed. There were repeated attacks here, especially by Alberto Contador . With Alejandro Valverde and Igor Antón , he set himself apart from the others. The trio only had a lead of five seconds over the other favorites at the finish. The winner of the day was David Moncoutie, who crossed the finish line 34 seconds before the best climbers. Since the previous day's winner and winner of the golden jersey, Alessandro Ballan, already had problems on the penultimate climb, he was unable to defend his lead jersey . So again Levi Leipheimer took over the golden jersey.
