Wulfing von Stubenberg
Wulfing von Stubenberg , also Wülfing von Stubenberg (* 1259 in Kapfenberg , Styria , Austria , † March 14, 1318 in Bamberg ) was a Dominican and Bishop of Lavant and Prince-Bishop of Bamberg .
Origin and career
Wulfing came from the Upper Styrian family of Stubenberg , which was related to the House of Habsburg . His parents were the same name Wulfing von Stubenberg (approx. 1220 - approx. 1280) and Elisabeth von Ortenburg (approx. 1225 - after March 15, 1287).
Wulfing acquired the academic degrees of Magister and Doctor decretorum and is documented as pastor of Bruck an der Mur in 1273 , as court chaplain of Salzburg Archbishop Friedrich von Walchen in 1278 and as Dominican in 1288. Later he was prior of the Friesach monastery and at the same time continued to hold the office of pastor of Bruck.
Bishop of Lavant
In 1290 Wulfing was elected Archbishop of Salzburg, but received no confirmation. After Bishop Heinrich von Helfenberg had been transferred to Gurk , Wulfing von Stubenberg was appointed his successor in Lavant in 1299.
Bishop of Bamberg
After the death of Bishop Leupold von Gründlach in 1303, the Bamberg bishop's chair initially remained vacant because the cathedral chapter could not agree on a candidate. One part of the chapter chose Magister Gerlach von Wetzlar, provost of Völkermarkt , the other the Bamberg cathedral provost Johannes von Muchel. Only after both elects had renounced the office of bishop to the Pope, as they could not count on confirmation in the canonical process due to irregularities, did Pope Benedict XI. Wulfing from Stubenberg to Bamberg on January 31, 1304.
During his tenure, numerous secular parishes were converted into monastic parishes. Presumably with Wulfing's support, a Dominican and a Dominican convent was built in Bamberg in 1310. In 1314 he founded the Augustinian Canons Neunkirchen , which he freed from the jurisdiction of the archdeaconate in 1317 . Individual monasteries were granted tithe and tax exemptions: in 1308 the Cistercian monastery Langheim , 1313 the Benedictine monastery Michelfeld and 1315 the Cistercian monastery St. Theodor . The continued indebtedness of the diocese could not be reduced during Wulfing's tenure.
Already in 1305 Wulfing appointed his brother Friedrich von Stubenberg captain of the Bamberg possessions in Carinthia .
Bishop Wulfing is buried together with the Bamberg bishops Eberhard I. , Egilbert , Timo and Heinrich II. Von Sternberg in a stone coffin, which today stands on the south wall of the crypt under the east choir of Bamberg Cathedral .
