Charles Wade Wilson (born February 1, 1959 in Greenville , Texas - † February 1, 2019 in Coppell , Texas ) was an American American football player on the position of quarterback . He played 19 seasons for five different teams in the National Football League (NFL), including the Minnesota Vikings and the Dallas Cowboys . After that he was still active as a quarterback coach in the NFL for a few years.

Early years

Wilson grew up in Greenville, his hometown, and in Commerce , Texas . He went to high school in Commerce and later attended Texas A&M University-Commerce. Here he played college football in the Lone Star Conference , where he became MVP in 1980 .

NFL (as a player)

Minnesota Vikings

In the 1981 NFL draft , Wilson was selected by the Minnesota Vikings in the eighth round in 210th place. In his first season he got three short appearances in the NFL. He didn't play a game in his sophomore year. In his third year in the NFL, he came on the last day of the season against the Cincinnati Bengals used and threw his first NFL touchdown . The game was won by 20:14. In 1985, Wilson was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes mellitus . From the 1987 season , Wilson advanced to the starting quarterback for the Vikings. After the 1988 season , he was elected to the Pro Bowl for his good performance . he had the NFL's top quarterback rating of the season (91.5).

In the 1990s he started the first three games of the season, but then injured his thumb and he was replaced by Rich Gannon for the remainder of the season . A year later he was replaced by Rich Gannon after the first five games of the season, due to his performances (3 touchdowns, 10 interceptions ).

Atlanta Falcons

On July 13, 1992, Wilson signed a contract with the Atlanta Falcons . Here he played nine games, the last three of the season as a starter, as the regular quarterback Chris Miller injured.

New Orleans Saints

On April 12, 1993, he signed a working paper with the New Orleans Saints . Here he was a direct starter in his position, ahead of Steve Walsh . With him you won the first five games of the season, but then ended the season with eight wins and eight losses, which was not enough for the playoffs. Wilson was then no longer used as a starter. He was released on March 18, 1994. On April 13th of the same year he was signed again. He was finally released on March 20, 1995.

Dallas Cowboys

On May 22, 1995, he was signed by the Dallas Cowboys . He was supposed to serve as the backup quarterback for Troy Aikman . Here he was part of the team that won Super Bowl XXX . He only started one game in his three years with the Cowboys.

Oakland Raiders

On July 6, 1998, Wilson signed a contract with the Oakland Raiders . Here he was only the third quarterback on the team. However, after Jeff George and his backup Donald Hollas were injured during the season , he led the Raiders in the last three games of the season (5 touchdowns, 4 interceptions). For the 1999 season he was only the third quarterback in the team, and he also suffered a groin injury. On December 30, 1999, he announced his retirement from professional life.

NFL (as a coach)

Wilson became quarterbacks coch with the Dallas Cowboys after his playing career. Here he was from 2000 to 2002. From 2004 to 2006 he was quarterbacks coach with the Chicago Bears . From 2007 to 2017 he again trained the quarterbacks of the Dallas Cowboys.

Wilson died on his 60th birthday, February 1, 2019, of diabetes. He left behind his wife and four children.
