Prince Friedrich Wilhelm Waldemar of Prussia (born August 2, 1817 in Berlin , † February 17, 1849 in Münster ) was a Prussian major general .

Life

His parents were Princess Marianne and Prince Wilhelm , the youngest brother of King Friedrich Wilhelm III .

On his tenth birthday, Waldemar, like all born princes of the Prussian royal family, was awarded the Order of the Black Eagle and was placed à la suite of the 2nd Battalion of the 4th Guard Landwehr Regiment. The young prince completed the cadet education customary in the Prussian aristocracy , which seamlessly led to a military career. His actual military career began on April 7, 1835, when he was transferred to the active 2nd Guards Regiment on foot . This was followed on June 26, 1836, the promotion to prime lieutenant and on March 29, 1838, the promotion to captain . On December 4, 1838, the prince was assigned to the Guard Dragoons Regiment with simultaneous promotion to Major , and at the same time to commander of the III. Battalion in the 3rd Guard Landwehr Regiment. After these activities in the infantry and cavalry he was assigned to the Guards Artillery Brigade for one year on November 3, 1842. On March 30, 1844, he was promoted to colonel .

In the same year 1844, the prince, together with the captain in the general staff Eduard von Oriola , the lieutenant Albrecht Wilhelm von der Groeben and the doctor Werner Friedrich Hoffmeister, began a long trip abroad to India , which led to the Himalayas and the Tibetan border . During the stay in India the tour company watched the First Sikh War on the side of the English . Waldemar was present at the great skirmishes at Mudki on December 18, 1845, at Ferozeshah on December 21 and 22, 1845, and at Sobraon on February 10, 1846. Werner Hoffmeister was killed during the Battle of Ferozeshah. In 1846 Waldemar returned to Berlin, where he and Oriola were awarded the Pour le Mérite order . In the following years, the Berlin Deckersche Hofdruckerei published the earnings of the trip in several scientifically and artistically elaborately produced books and albums. These works are considered rare collector's items in the antiquarian book trade.

On July 3, 1846, he was appointed major general à la suite of the Guard Dragoon Regiment and on August 15, 1846 he was appointed regimental commander. In July 1848 he received a " Master of Arts " doctorate from Cambridge University . On March 9, 1848, he became the commander of the 13th Cavalry Brigade in Munster in Westphalia. He died there on February 17, 1849. He was buried in the family crypt in the Berlin Cathedral .

As early as 1834, Waldemarstrasse in Berlin's Spandau suburb was named after him . Shortly after his death in 1849, the name was transferred to a new street in the newly created Luisenstadt ; an area in which streets and squares were named after his mother, his brother Adalbert , his uncle Heinrich and his aunt Alexandrine ( Mariannenplatz , Heinrichplatz ).
