Eduard Ernst Lobo da Silveira Graf von Oriola (born April 20, 1809 in Stockholm , † October 20, 1862 in Breslau ) was a Prussian lieutenant general .

Life

He was a member of the Prussian Counts of Oriola and the second son of the Portuguese diplomat Joaquim José Lobo da Silveira (1772-1846) and his wife Sophia Amalie, née Murray from the house of Atholl (1787-1862). The father was accepted into the Prussian counts as Joaquim von Oriola in 1822 .

Military career

After his education in the Berlin Cadet Corps , Oriola was transferred to the Guard Dragoon Regiment of the Prussian Army on April 5, 1826 as a Second Lieutenant . For further training he graduated from the General War School in 1829/32 . In August 1837, Oriola, accompanied by General Friedrich zu Dohna-Schlobitten, took part in the exercises of the French Army at Compiègne and was promoted to Prime Lieutenant the following year . This was followed in April 1839 by his command to serve with the General Staff of the VIII Army Corps . With the promotion to captain on March 30, 1840 Oriola was transferred to the Great General Staff . Appointed Chamberlain on March 14, 1842 , Oriola was in command of Prince Adalbert of Prussia in 1842/43 and took him on a trip to Brazil. They brought the Order of the Black Eagle to Emperor Pedro II on behalf of King Friedrich Wilhelm IV .

In 1844/46 Oriola was commanded to accompany Prince Waldemar of Prussia on his journey to India. They toured the Himalayas and Tibet . In British India they got into the First Sikh War and took part in the fighting on the side of the English. In recognition of his bravery and prudence, especially in the Battle of Ferozeshah , Oriola was awarded the Order of Pour le Mérite on his return on December 18, 1846 . In the meantime promoted to major , he initially served in the Great General Staff again. Commanded from April to July 1848 to serve as a wing adjutant by Friedrich Wilhelm IV, he was with the king on the battlefield in Schleswig - Holstein . On October 14, 1848, Oriola resigned from the troop service and became a regular staff officer in the Guard Dragoons Regiment. For a short time he acted as leader of this regiment from late November 1850 to mid-February 1851. On March 11, 1852 Oriola was appointed commander of the 7th Hussars in Bonn and appointed in this position on March 23, 1852 Lieutenant Colonel and on July 13, 1854 Colonel promoted. From October 30, 1856 to July 1, 1857 he was in command of the 5th Cavalry Brigade and then the 2nd Guard Cavalry Brigade. In the meantime, Oriola had been placed à la suite of the 7th Hussar Regiment on December 4, 1856 . On May 22, 1858 he was promoted to major general and on November 19, 1859 he was given command of the 1st Guards Cavalry Brigade. Finally, Oriola was commissioned on July 1, 1860 with the leadership of the 11th division and appointed him on July 24, 1861 as division commander. In this position he was promoted to lieutenant general on October 18, 1861. Oriola was awarded the star for the Order of the Red Eagle, 2nd class with swords on the ring, on November 14, 1861, for his long-standing services . In addition, in the course of his military career he had a. a. Received the Grand Cross of the Order of the Oak Crown , the Commander's Cross 2nd Class of the Order of Henry the Lion and the Order of Saint Anne II Class.

He died of a heart attack in Breslau on October 20, 1862 while he was in the service .

On June 28, 1853, Oriola married Maximiliane von Arnim (1818-1894) in Wiepersdorf . She was the daughter of the poets Achim and Bettina von Arnim . The following children were born from the marriage:
