Wallis Giunta (* 1985 in Ottawa ) is a Canadian opera singer with a mezzo-soprano voice and actress .

Education

Giunta was born in Ottawa , Ontario , to Colleen Wrighte and Michael Giunta. She has two siblings. Wallis sang in the Ottawa Central Children's Choir from ages 9 to 15. She began her vocal training with Charlotte Stewart in Ottawa at the age of 13. At 17, she began her post-secondary vocal studies at the University of Ottawa . Following her junior year, she moved to the Glenn Gould School of the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto , where she received her Performance Diploma (voice) at the age of 21 and her Artist Diploma (voice) at the age of 23. During her studies she won first place in the concert of the Royal Conservatory Orchestra. She attended training programs at the Aspen Music Festival and School , the Ravinia Festival , the International Meistersinger Academy, the Georg Solti Accademia and the Banff Center. Wallis graduated from the renowned Ensemble Studio of the Canadian Opera Company in 2011, the Metropolitan Opera Lindemann Young Artist Development Program and the Juilliard School Artist Diploma in Opera Studies in 2013. She studied with Jean MacPhail in Toronto and Edith Wiens in New York.

Career

In the spring of 2010 Giunta made her professional debut as Cherubino in Le nozze di Figaro with Opera Atelier and the Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra in Toronto. She spent the summer of 2010 at the Ravinia Festival in Chicago , where she auditioned for the Young Artist Development Program of the Metropolitan Opera Lindemann. She was selected by James Levine to join the program in Fall 2011. In early 2011 she made her American operatic debut as Pribaoutki in the Robert Lepage production of Stravinsky's The Nightingale & Other Short Fables , on tour with the Canadian Opera Company. During this season she also played Second Lady in the production of Mozart's Die Zauberflöte , directed by Diane Paulus, and made her debut at Opera Lyra Ottawa as Lola in Cavalleria rusticana by Mascagni . In 2012 she appeared in two productions of the Metropolitan Opera Young Artists in New York , as Phénice in Gluck's Armide and as Dorabella in Stephen Wadsworth's production of Così fan tutte . She also made her debut at the Fort Worth Opera, again in the role of Cherubino.

In 2013 she returned as Annio with the Canadian Opera Company in La clemenza di Tito , directed by Christopher Alden. At the second performance in this production run, she scored a triumph when she stepped in the role of Sesto. This was followed by her debuts on the main stage of the Metropolitan Opera in as Contessa Ceprano in Rigoletto ( Verdi ) and at the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris as Tiffany in I Was Looking at the Ceiling and Then I Saw the Sky by John Adams . In the same year she made her Asian debut with the Taipei Symphony Orchestra, in which she took up the role of Annio again.

In 2014 she returned to the Canadian Opera Company to play Dorabella in a new production by director Atom Egoyan . She also sang at the Canadian premiere of Louis Andriessen's one-woman opera Anaïs Nin at the 21C Festival in Toronto and returned to the Opera Atelier with the role of Bradamante in Handel's Alcina . In early 2015 she sang again at the Metropolitan Opera - this time as Olga in a new production of The Merry Widow , which was broadcast worldwide in HD. There followed a return to Opera Lyra Ottawa as Cherubino and a debut at the Teatro dell'Opera di Roma , where she resumed her role in I Was Looking at the Ceiling and Then I Saw the Sky . In autumn 2015 she became a member of the ensemble of the Leipzig Opera . In November 2015 she made her operatic debut there with the role of Cherubino in a new production of Le nozze di Figaro . Her role debut as Siébel in Gounod's Faust and her first Wagner role as Rossweise in Die Walküre followed at the Leipzig Opera . In March 2016 she made another role debut as Angelina in La Cenerentola at the Leipzig Opera. She made her debut at the Deutsche Oper am Rhein in April 2016 , followed by a debut with the Hamburger Symphoniker in May 2016 and her role debut as Mercédès in Carmen for the new production of Barry Kosky at the Frankfurt Opera in July 2016. In autumn 2016 she made her debut in a new role at the Opera Atelier as Dido in Dido and Aeneas and made her debut in concert with the Munich Radio Orchestra and the Nova Scotia Symphony. In 2017 she played in three productions for Opera North and sang the title roles in La Cenerentola and L'enfant et les sortilèges as well as Dinah in Trouble in Tahiti .
