Walter Flegel (born November 17, 1934 in Freiburg in Silesia , district of Schweidnitz , Lower Silesia ; † June 14, 2011 in Potsdam ) was a German writer .

Life

Walter Flegel was the son of a bricklayer . In 1946 the family had to leave their Silesian homeland and settled in Stöhna near Leipzig . Walter Flegel attended high school in Markkleeberg . After graduation in 1953 he went to the barracked people's police , attended an officers' school in Dresden from 1953 to 1956 and from 1956 was an artillery officer of the National People's Army (NVA), which was being established. In 1957 he was one of the founders of the Central Literature Circle of the NVA; In the following years he led a circle of writing NVA soldiers. From 1960 to 1963 he studied at the "Johannes R. Becher" literature institute in Leipzig. From 1963 to 1973 he headed the NVA district clubhouse in Potsdam, and from 1973 to 1986 he was an employee of the GDR Military History Institute in Potsdam. In 1986 he left the NVA as a lieutenant colonel and became a freelance writer. After the reunification he founded the Brandenburg Literature College in Potsdam and was its managing director for a time.

Walter Flegel wrote novels , short stories , books for young people and poetry , whereby his early works are strongly influenced by his experience as a professional officer in the NVA. He also worked as an editor, conducted readings and literary discussions for children of all grades as well as for adults as well as supervised writing students and people with disabilities and the elderly.

Walter Flegel had been a member of the SED since 1952 ; he worked for the Ministry for State Security under the code name "Max Retlaff". Later he was also chairman of the Potsdamer Kulturbund and city ​​councilor there . Since 1968 he was a member of the GDR Writers' Association , later also as a member of the executive committee. Most recently he was a member of the Association of German Writers .
