Walter Schuppich

Walter Schuppich , (born March 22, 1921 in Vienna ; † June 8, 1999 there ) was an Austrian lawyer and professional politician.

As a lawyer, Schuppich was a generalist. His clients included companies as well as private individuals, including politicians and artists. Above all, he went down in Austrian legal history as the “attorney for lawyers”, who had previously known no representative of the legal profession with a comparable socio-political efficiency and media presence.

Live and act

Walter Schuppich was founded in 1921 as the son of a policeman who was born in Vienna and wished, as he his life to rickets suffered and his childhood spent in a wheelchair, medical study. Finally he switched to studying law , which he completed in 1943 with a doctorate at the University of Vienna . To finance his studies he gave piano and violin lessons ; for the composer Franz Lehár he transcribed several scores from his operettas for accordion .

In 1949 Walter Schuppich was entered on the list of lawyers. Together with Werner Sporn, he founded one of the few Austrian law firms at the time, which other lawyers later joined. The law firm "Schuppich, Sporn und Winischhofer" still bears the name of its founder and senior partner in the company of its law firm. Walter Schuppich was also the builder of the attic storey designed by Coop Himmelb (l) au for the law firm “Schuppich Sporn und Winschhofer” at Falkestrasse 6 in Vienna, in the 1st district.

In 1969 Walter Schuppich was elected President of the Bar Association for Vienna, Lower Austria and Burgenland (later the Vienna Bar Association ), to which he remained for 24 years, 17 years of which together with Vice-Presidents Friedrich Grohs and Fritz Leon. During this time essential reforms of the professional ethical law were introduced.

In 1970 Walter Schuppich founded the free “First Legal Information” of the Vienna Bar Association for the public seeking law. The first Viennese attorney talks took place on February 1, 1973 in a small group at the Vienna Bar Association. Walter Schuppich wanted to give the lawyers behind the Iron Curtain a place to meet in Austria as a neutral country at a time when it was politically extremely difficult to maintain a free exchange of ideas between East and West. These discussions are still held today as part of the annual European Presidents' Conferences (European Bar Associations).

In 1973 the goal of creating the Austrian Bar Association (ÖRAK) was achieved. In addition, Walter Schuppich initiated an amendment to the Lawyers' Act , with which the practice of trainee lawyers was adapted to the times. Schuppich achieved a change in disciplinary law and the lawyers' pension rights were now enshrined in law. Walter Schuppich received a lot of support from Justice Minister Christian Broda , to whose criminal procedure reform Schuppich contributed significantly.

In 1989 Walter Schuppich and other professional representatives founded the transnational lawyers' association DACH.

With his media presence, his networking across party lines and his popularity among the population, Walter Schuppich created an unprecedented, citizen-oriented image for lawyers. Several times he was traded for the highest political offices and was referred to as a “gifted speaker and writer”. However, his focus was on representing the profession of lawyer in public and giving the state and the bar association a political hearing. With the "lawyer president" Schuppich created his own office, so to speak.

Walter Schuppich described himself as liberal . He was never a party member, although he was said to be close to the social democracy and later also to the “ Liberal Forum ”. He was regularly involved in the field of human rights , such as in 1994 together with other celebrities in the public appeal “Protection of the political refugee” or through his board membership in the association “ Licht ins Dunkel ”.

Walter Schuppich was also in the spotlight because he represented former Federal Chancellor Fred Sinowatz and writer Johannes Mario Simmel against the right-wing populist Jörg Haider . The assumption of a trusteeship with the former finance minister Hannes Androsch was exploited by the media, as was the personal advice given by Federal President Thomas Klestil on private matters.

In his play "Elisabeth II." Thomas Bernhard lets one of the protagonists talk about a "certain Dr. Schuppich ”speak. Bernhard probably took a liking to the name that was in use at the time the piece was written; a real relationship between Walter Schuppich and Bernhard's Dr. Schuppich is excluded due to its characterization. Walter Schuppich left the attribution uncommented. But it is also mentioned in the correspondence between Thomas Bernhard and Siegfried Unseld published by Raimund Fellinger, Martin Huber and Julia Ketterer at Suhrkamp .

Walter Schuppich is the author and co-author of legal works, he received the Great Gold Medal for Services to the Republic of Austria and the honorary membership of the American Bar Association in Chicago . 1994 he was together with Kurt Waldheim , the honorary doctorate awarded. In addition, the Walter Schuppich Symposium and the Walter Schuppich Prize go back to him.

Walter Schuppich was a self-confessed Freemason ; a plaque in the Freemason Museum at Rosenau Castle is dedicated to him. For many years he held the highest legal office in Austrian Freemasonry.

On the occasion of Schuppich's death, Vienna's mayor Michael Häupl paid tribute to his work as a long-time member of the board of trustees of the Vienna Integration Fund or as president of the Association of Friends of the Vienna Police .

Walter Schuppich rests in a grave of honor at the Vienna Central Cemetery .
