Walter Wilhelm von Gersdorff (born March 19, 1848 in Neisse , † August 28, 1929 in Berlin ) was a Prussian lieutenant general and commandant of Magdeburg .

Life

Walter was a son of the Prussian Lieutenant General Louis von Gersdorff (1807–1880) and his wife Pauline, née Ehrt (1813–1891).

Military career

Gersdorff visited the cadet houses in Kulm and Berlin . He was then on 18 April 1865 as a second lieutenant of the 3rd Guards Regiment walk the Prussian Army transferred. During the war against Austria in 1866 , he was seriously wounded in a battle near Thrush by a shot that hit him above the hip and was awarded the Order of the Crown, IV Class with Swords, for his behavior . After his recovery he was commanded from October 30, 1867 to July 18, 1870 as an adjutant of the Guard Landwehr battalion in Stettin .

Subsequently, with the mobilization on the occasion of the war against France , Gersdorff initially became an adjutant of the replacement battalion of his regular regiment and from September 21, 1870 to January 11, 1871, took part in the siege of Paris and the battles at Le Bourget as adjutant of the II battalion , Stains , Pierrefitte and Pont-Iblon. In mid-November 1870 he was promoted to prime lieutenant and after the peace treaty was awarded the Iron Cross 2nd class and on November 4, 1871 appointed regimental adjutant. After a command at the Jülich NCO School and the meanwhile promotion to captain , Gersdorff was appointed company commander in his regiment in mid-December 1879 . With the promotion to major he was aggregated into his regiment on September 1, 1887 and appointed commander of the fusilier battalion on August 18, 1888. At the beginning of March 1889 he was transferred to the 1st West Prussian Grenadier Regiment No. 6 in Posen as commander of the fusilier battalion . Gersdorff was promoted to lieutenant colonel and regular staff officer at the end of March 1893 . On November 11, 1895 he was promoted to colonel and became the commander of the infantry regiment “von Alvensleben” (6th Brandenburgisches) No. 52 . With promotion to major general , he was transferred to Torgau on March 15, 1899 as commander of the 16th Infantry Brigade . This was followed on January 27, 1902, when he was employed as a commandant of Magdeburg. In this capacity Gersdorff received on March 22, 1902 the character of Lieutenant General and on September 11, 1903 the star for the Crown Order II. Class with swords on rings. In approval of his leave request , he was the star for under ceremony Red Eagle on August 11, 1906, statutory pension for disposition .

He moved to Berlin, where he died on August 28, 1929.

family

Gerdorff married on April 15, 1879 in Potsdam Hedwig von Blumenthal (1853-1930), a daughter of the district president Robert von Blumenthal . The two daughters Margarethe (1883-1916) and Elisabeth (1885-1922) emerged from the marriage.
