Dawn of War III is a real-time strategy game for Windows , Mac OS and Linux set in the Warhammer 40,000 universe . Like its two predecessors, the game was developed by Relic Entertainment . The publication took over the Japanese publisher Sega , who released the game on April 27, 2017. It's the sequel to Dawn of War II from 2009.

action

The single player - Campaign consists of 16 consecutive missions in which the player changes regularly between the three peoples (Space Marines, Eldar, Orks) and their perspectives. All three races are in search of a powerful Eldar artifact, the Spear of Khaine.

Gameplay

The three races of the game (Space Marines, Eldar, Orks) are alternately given to the player during the single player campaign. In the missions, the third series part relies on the common conventions of real-time strategy with basic construction, unit production and resource conquest, similar to the first part. Spread across the map, the player must conquer control points in order to generate requirement points and energy. These are needed to expand the troops. In addition, particularly powerful hero units also play a role, as in the predecessor Dawn of War II . The elite points, which are automatically generated over time during the single player campaign, have been added as a new resource. They are used to request elite units and super skills. Locally set up shield generators protect the troops from long-range attacks, camouflage fields help to hide them from the eyes of the enemy.

Development history

The development of the third series part was announced in May 2016. While the first part had the focus on classic base and troop building, the second had shifted the focus to strong hero characters and role-playing elements. The third part should address both target groups equally. The game was expanded to include additional functions with several patches after its release .

Dawn of War III received mostly positive reviews ( Metacritic : 77%).

“Dawn of War 3 sparks intense and gripping battles with heroes and normal units. The campaign and multiplayer battles are great, but the multiplayer scope is a bit meager. "

- Marcel Kleffmann : Test report 4Players

Dawn of War III could not meet sales expectations. The analysis platform Steamspy estimates the sales figures on the leading online platform Steam at under 600,000 copies, in contrast to 2.7 million copies of the predecessor. Because of the bad sales figures, Relic announced that it would no longer implement previously announced extensions.
