Werner Pesch (born October 25, 1938 in Birkesdorf , now Düren ) is a retired professor of theoretical physics at the University of Bayreuth .

Life

Scientific career

Werner Pesch received his doctorate in 1968 under Ludwig Tewordt (1926-2016) at the University of Hamburg with a thesis on the theory of nuclear spin relaxation in superconductors of the second kind . In 1974 he took over a professorship at the University of Hanover as head of the statistical physics department ; In 1978 he moved to the University of Bayreuth. After his official retirement at the beginning of 2004, he is still closely connected to the university and is still scientifically active.

The focus of his diverse scientific work was initially on theoretical solid-state physics , primarily on superconductivity (e.g. the well-known " Kramer-Pesch effect "). Then it was about models of statistical physics and in the last decades about the dynamics of liquids . His work on Rayleigh-Bénard convection received a lot of attention here .

Chess player

Werner Pesch is an avid chess player . In 1958 he took 2nd place at the German Youth Championship in Hitzacker and in 1961 7th place at the German Individual Championship in Bad Pyrmont . Due to the success in Bad Pyrmont, he received the title of German Master .

At the European team championship in Oberhausen in 1961 , he was part of the German national team.

After that he practically only acted as a team player. For example, he won the German team championship in 1970 with the chess department of SC Concordia Hamburg .

Werner Pesch played the finals of the German team championships in 1961 and 1962 for ESV Turm Köln, 1963 , 1964 and 1965 for SK Palamedes , 1967 , 1968 and 1970 for SC Concordia, 1974 for SG Porz , and in the 1st Bundesliga in 1974 / 75 for the Hannoversche SK, 1984/85 , 1985/86 , 1986/87 and 1987/88 for the SC 1868 Bamberg .
