Germania Wernigerode is a German football club from Wernigerode in the Harz district . The club was founded on June 20, 2002 and is one of the two successor clubs of 1. FC Wernigerode , which went into bankruptcy and was formed from the merger of the clubs FC Einheit 1990 Wernigerode and SV Germania 1916 Wernigerode in 1994.
In 1916 the club was founded as FC Germania 1916 Wernigerode . At that time there was already the club FC Viktoria 1910 Wernigerode, founded on February 28, 1910 . During these times many different sports were practiced in both clubs. With the 1917/18 season one entered the game operations of the Association of Central German Ball Game Clubs . The club played in the 2nd class of the Gauliga Harz. In the 1920/21 season Wernigerode was promoted to 1st class Gauliga Harz. Due to the newly introduced Elbekreisliga, the club remained second class. It came to a clash with the city rivals FC Viktoria 1910, with which there was much tension in the following years. With the dissolution of the Elbe District League in 1923, Germania played first class for the first time. Over the years the club has become the clear number one in the city and the only serious competitor of the series champions FC Germania 1900 Halberstadt . After several attempts, it was possible in 1926 to lease the area at the Kohlgarten in order to build up a home of its own. Before that, the club had to share the Anger as a venue with many clubs.

1933 to 1945 - VfL Germania 1910 Wernigerode
VfL Germania 1910
With the restructuring of German football in 1933, the Gauliga Harz was dissolved. Germania merged with FC Viktoria 1910 Wernigerode to form VfL Germania 1910 Wernigerode and rose as runner-up in the Magdeburg-Anhalt district class. In the 1936/37 season they were relegated to the 1st district class Harz. Only a year later, however, the championship was won and managed to return to the 2nd division. With the subsequent runner-up in the district class, the club just missed participation in the promotion round to Gauliga Mitte . With the season 1939/40 Wernigerode withdrew voluntarily into the 1st district class Harz. Due to the war it became more and more difficult to keep the game going. In the 1942/43 season they started for the last time, after a further restructuring in the 2nd class sports district Harz.
After the end of the war, all clubs were dissolved. The SG Wernigerode was formed in the same year . Until the introduction of the districts in the GDR in 1952, the loose sports group played exclusively in the district class West. The 1948/49 season was remarkable. Due to the equality of points with EHW Thale , a decision game was necessary. In front of 7,000 spectators in Halberstadt, this game was lost 1: 2. Thus, Thale rose to the state class Saxony-Anhalt and only a year later in the GDR upper league . On April 13, 1951, the name was changed to BSG Aufbau Wernigerode . In 1954, the company sports association qualified for the first round of the FDGB Cup . Against Chemie Leuna, the team from the Harz lost 1: 5.

With the 1954/55 season, the football department of Aufbau joined the BSG Motor Wernigerode , which was founded in 1949. In 1957 Motor Wernigerode was promoted to the Magdeburg district league . The class was held until the 1961/62 season. 1966 succeeded again the promotion to the district league. Only one year later, the city rival BSG Einheit Wernigerode followed in the same class. However, when Motor again relegated to the district class after the 1968/69 season, the BSG unit became number one in the city. Many players switched to the rival. Efforts to merge were rejected again. After the 1974/75 season, no more teams were deployed, and so it came about that for years only football was played in the junior division at Motor. In 1979 the men's game business was resumed. Two teams started in the lowest class. In 1986 Motor Wernigerode finally made the third promotion and played again in the district league, where they met again on the unit . In the season 1988/89 the runner-up was won. Master was unit Wernigerode, which failed again in the promotion round to the GDR league . Due to the renewed second place in the following season 1989/90 with 54: 6 points, the meanwhile renamed Wernigeröder SV Rot-Weiß qualified for the newly created Landesliga Sachsen-Anhalt . Also in the state league, Rot-Weiß Wernigerode failed in the first two seasons as runner-up behind SV Merseburg 99 and Unity Wernigerode on the possible rise to the Oberliga Nordost . The club presented itself very successfully in the cup. Between 1989 and 1991 the club won the Magdeburg District Cup three times. In the related games in the FDGB Cup, the team lost 5-0 to BFC Dynamo in front of 10,000 onlookers in 1989 . In 1990 the club reached the round of 16 after victories over Germania Ilmenau and Wismut Aue , in which the WSV lost 3-1 to Chemnitzer FC . In 1991 the Wernigeröder were the first to win the newly introduced state cup against SV Merseburg . In the second main round of the DFB Cup , which was achieved with this, Rot-Weiß Wernigerode beat 1. FC Köln in front of 11,300 spectators with 0: 4. This is still the record number of spectators for a game in Wernigerode. Subsequently, the football department broke away from the Wernigerode SV Rot-Weiß and acted independently as SV Germania 1916 Wernigerode .
For years there has been speculation about a possible merger with FC Einheit. On June 3, 1994 the time had come. Both clubs merged to form 1.FC Wernigerode . Thus, the first team played in the Oberliga Nordost . The second team in the Association League Saxony-Anhalt (the state league was renamed in 1994). A total of 4 teams were sent into the race. The home games were played in the stadium on Mannsbergstrasse . The initial euphoria quickly gave way. On the other hand, after the introduction of the regional league in the same year, well-known clubs such as B. 1. FC Magdeburg , 1. FC Union Berlin and FC Energie Cottbus to Wernigerode. Constant personal discussions in the board of directors provided further fuel. So it happened that after the 13th place in the 1995/96 season, the gang had to be started in the Association League Saxony-Anhalt. After relegation was celebrated, it came to relegation due to unfortunate circumstances. Year after year the club lost players who did not want to play in the lower teams. In April 1998 the third team split off and the FC Einheit Wernigerode was founded . In the following years it became more and more difficult to keep up in the association league, especially as talented players were poached by FC Einheit to play several classes lower. In the 2001/02 season it came to the fact that Wernigerode tried to create promotion to the league with many foreign players. The season goal was missed early. All players left the club for the semi-series. The club got more and more financial difficulties due to mismanagement. In the second half of the season the class could be held with young players and players from the second team. Nevertheless, the club had to file for bankruptcy after the end of the season.
The members of the former 1. FC Wernigerode founded the Germania Wernigerode club on June 20, 2002 . After several attempts, the promotion to the state league was achieved in 2008. In the same year, Germania became the first Harz Cup winner. So since 1992 there was the first city derby Germania against unity (1: 3/1: 4). 1,370 spectators came to the Kohlgarten. After being in first place in the table in October, they slipped to 11th place, which led to relegation. In 2012 Germania was relegated to the Harz regional league and in 2015 again to the regional class.
