The shooting locations were the Berlin Holy Family Church in Lichterfelde , the Stephanuskirche in Zehlendorf , the area around Moltkestrasse in Berlin- Lichterfelde-West , the Matthäuskirche in Steglitz and the Lübarser Strasse industrial estate in Wittenau (as the seat of the Gnekow company).

Further filming took place in Rome as well as in Austria and Hungary .

The pilot film was broadcast on ZDF on September 25, 1990 . The first season ran until December 20, 1990. The second season was broadcast from September 24, 1991.

In 1992 and 1994/1995, ZDF repeated both seasons. In 1996 the series ran on RTL 2 and again in 2001 on ZDF . In 2002 and 2003 it was broadcast on B.TV. In 2016 the series was repeated for the first time on ZDFkultur .

The protagonist of the series is the devout nun Maria, who is always offensive with her modern and often contradicting views of the church. She is kind-hearted and has an open ear for everyone. Maria is happy with her life as a nun until she falls in love and is faced with the question of giving up her previous life for love.
