The Wietersdorfer (formerly Wietersdorfer Group ) is an Austrian industrial conglomerate with headquarters in Klagenfurt am Wörthersee . The parent company WIG Wietersdorfer Holding GmbH manages the five business areas. It acts as the umbrella brand for the two holdings. The owner is the one hundred percent family-owned company Knoch, Kern & Co. KG . The group of companies is active in over 19 countries with 47 production sites through subsidiaries and investments and markets the brands Poloplast, Hobas , and Flowtite w & p cement .

history

In 1893 Johann Hofbauer started a limestone and gravel extraction plant in Peggau . In the first few years, the limestone was sold without further processing and was primarily used for building roads and railways.

The main factory of the Wietersdorfer Group was also founded in 1893 by the brothers Philipp, Gottlieb and Karl Knoch as "Wietersdorfer Cementwerke Phil. Knoch & Cie" in Wietersdorf, 35 km from Klagenfurt. At that time it was one of seven cement works in the Duchy of Carinthia and started production on October 10, 1893. As early as 1894, the factory was expanded by three Roman kilns , as the operating temperature in the existing shaft kiln was too low and the desired quality of the cement could not be achieved.

By 1902, the company was expanded to include three more Portland ovens, three Liban ovens and one Schlegel oven, with which ten ovens of various types could be produced, whereby the daily output at that time was limited to a few tons due to the design as shaft ovens .

In 1915, the alpine asbestos slate works “Durit” in nearby Villach were taken over and the production of asbestos roof panels started. During the First World War, the demand for cement increased rapidly and large quantities were supplied for the expansion of the Alpini garrison and fortifications in Tarvisio . In order to optimize production, w & p Zement GmbH was founded and an acquired Portland cement factory in Hornburg was added. Due to the war, the production of the asbestos roof panels had to be interrupted from 1917 and could only be restarted in 1919.

After the Wietersdorfer Zement- und Durit-Werke applied for a permit to use a pipe system (approval) in 1931, the competent authority demanded that the backflowing process water from the existing sewage treatment plant must be clarified again before it flows into natural waters. The necessary pipe systems were produced in-house with a purchased and optimized pipe manufacturing machine, and this ultimately formed the basis for the further production area “pipe systems”.

In 1939 another kiln was put into operation, which worked according to the LEPOL process and alone guaranteed a daily capacity of 100 tons of cement. After 71,000 tons of cement (equivalent to a daily production for 355 days at that time) were ordered by the state-controlled sales community South-East , which were mainly needed for the construction of the Southeast Wall, the cement works were fully utilized until the end of the Second World War .

From March 1, 1949, the Alois Kern company leased the cement factory and its facilities in Peggau and built the new cement plant that was planned and under construction before the war, in which cement production started in September 1949. This was not very economical in the first few years, as both the raw material and the cement had to be ground in one and the same mill. In 1953, therefore, an own raw material mill was put into operation, increasing the annual capacity from an average of 30,000 tons of cement in 1953 to around 50,000 tons in 1955. It was not until 1958 that Alois Kern acquired the facilities, which had previously been “ owned by the Germans ” and administered by the occupying powers . In 1959, the shares in the Peggauer cement works of Alois Kern and the Wietersdorfer cement works Phil. Knoch & Co. were settled .

In 1955 the Poloplast company was founded in Wegscheid on the outskirts of Linz and in 1957 the company portfolio was expanded to include the HOBAS Pipe Systems division.

In 1968/69 the products ThermoMörtel, ThermoPutz and ThermoSchlitzmörtel were developed together with the Graz University of Technology . These products are made of perlite , which expands at high temperatures and thus increases its original volume by a factor of 15 to 20 while at the same time increasing the thermal insulation properties. These products were marketed from 1970. From the end of the 1970s, polystyrene was added to the plasters as an alternative to the perlites , which significantly improved the thermal insulation properties, but reduced the compressive strength . With the increasing spread of thermal insulation composite systems in Austria from the mid-1980s , these insulation plasters / mortars were finally largely pushed back from the facade area.

With the commissioning of a new plant with a rotary kiln and satellite coolers at Salonit Anhovo in 1977, a capacity of one million tons of cement per year was achieved.

One year later, HOBAS Rohrsysteme in Wietersdorf started producing centrifugal tubes in the diameter range 600 - 1400 mm. The first export projects, e.g. B. the renewal of the pipelines at the Amsteg power plant could be realized.

In 1988 the building materials company Baumit was founded together with the Wopfinger Stein- und Kalkwerke . The then managing partners Dieter Kern (Wietersdorfer) and Friedrich Schmid ( Schmid Industrie Holding ) thus formed the cornerstone for today's European brand with headquarters in Wopfing , in the Lower Austrian district of Wiener Neustadt-Land .

After Intercement doo was founded in 2000 by four companies , which in turn held shares in Salonit doo , w & p Zementwerke GmbH and in the Trbovlje cement plant , the shares in Trbovlje were sold and shares in a cement plant in Beočin in the following years ( Serbia ) acquired. The Wietersdorfer are majority owners in Intercement doo At the same time, Salonit became the majority owner of IGM Zagorje doo in Zagorje ob Savi and Solkanska industria apna doo (SIA) and further investments in several ready-mixed concrete plants and companies in the fields of building materials, environment and engineering were acquired .

Wietersdorfer Baustoffe Beteiligungen (WBB) was founded in 2007 in order to bundle the group holdings and to manage them better .

In 2011 the company was split up and the business areas were realigned. From the & Wietersdorfer Peggauer Zementwerke GmbH were the w & p Zement GmbH , w & p Baustoffe GmbH and w & p Kalk GmbH . These three new companies are part of the five new business areas cement and concrete, lime, building materials, POLOPLAST and HOBAS .

2014 has been found that in Görtschitztal exceedances of HCB are present. As a thermal disposal of HCB-containing blue lime is carried out at the Wietersdorf plant as part of the remediation of the Donau Chemie landfill in Brückl , a connection was proven and the plant's approval for the utilization of blue lime was withdrawn.

In 2017, the building materials division, which comprises 27 companies in 14 countries and employs 650 people, was sold to Wopfingen building materials industry. This also includes the trademark rights of the brands "Baumit" and "Kema".

Business areas

Cement & concrete

All activities related to the development, production, processing and sales of cements and concretes are bundled in the cement and concrete business area.

The w & p Zement GmbH is one of the three successor companies of the Wietersdorfer & Peggauer Zementwerke GmbH (along w & p Baustoffe GmbH and w & p Kalk GmbH ) with locations in Peggau and Wietersdorf . It is a producer of cement and binders . The company was founded in 1893 as Wietersdorfer Portland and Roman Cementwerke Philipp Knoch by Philipp, Karl and Gottlieb Knoch and forms the cornerstone of today's corporate group.

In 1987 the former Wietersdorfer Zementwerke Phil. Knoch & Cie and Peggauer Zementwerke Alois Kern merged and formed the Wietersdorfer und Peggauer Zementwerke GmbH .

The w & p Beton GmbH includes the concrete activities w & p Zement GmbH.
