William Moris Stewart

William Morris Stewart (born August 9, 1827 in Galen , Wayne County , New York , † April 23, 1909 in Washington, DC ) was an American lawyer and politician . From 1864 to 1875 and from 1887 to 1905 he was Senator for the state of Nevada .

Life

When Stewart was a child, his parents moved to Trumbull County , Ohio . As a young man he started out as a math teacher in Ohio. In 1849 he began studying at Yale University , but dropped out in 1850 to move to California . Like many young men of his time, the gold rush drew him there. He arrived in San Francisco but soon left town to look for gold near Nevada City , California. At the same time he studied law. In 1852 Stewart was admitted to practice in Nevada City. He was soon appointed prosecutor and was briefly Attorney General of California in 1854, at the age of 27 .

In 1860 Stewart moved to Virginia City , Nevada. Here he was involved in mining litigation and supported the expansion of the Comstock Lode silver mine . After Nevada joined the United States in 1864 as the 36th state, he was involved in drafting a constitution for the state.

In 1864 Stewart was elected to the United States Senate for the Republican Party . He resigned from the Senate on March 3, 1875, as he was no longer running in the Senate election. He then worked as a lawyer in Nevada and California. In 1887, however, he successfully faced another Senate election. He was also able to win the re-elections in 1893 and 1899. In 1893 he left the Republican Party and joined the Silver Party . At the latest in the 1899 election, however, he was again a member of the Republicans.

Stewart renounced a candidacy in the Senate election in 1904 and resigned from the Senate on March 3, 1905. He stayed in Washington, where he died in 1909. He was cremated and his ashes were initially buried in Laurel Hill Cemetery in San Francisco. She was later transferred to the Holly Cross Cemetery in Colma .
