Windows-1258 is an 8-bit character encoding of the Windows operating system. It covers the orthography of the Vietnamese language .
Since this orthography uses a total of 134 characters in addition to the ASCII characters, a simple extension of the ASCII character set to 8-bit is not possible. Windows-1258 solves this problem by using combining characters that combine with the base consonants to create the necessary combinations. The character set itself is largely based on Windows-1252 , but contains a few more Vietnamese letters and characters in addition to the diacritics.
