Windows-1250 is an 8-bit character encoding that was developed for the Microsoft Windows operating system . It encodes characters that are required for Central and Eastern European languages and covers Polish , Czech , Slovak , Slovenian , Hungarian , Serbo-Croatian ( Latin orthography ), Romanian and Albanian , but also German . The character set is based on ISO 8859-2 . As in Windows-1252 , the control characters in Windows-1250 have been replaced by typographical punctuation marks and additional letters, but the sorting of the characters has also been changed.
