Gustav Martin Wolfgang Liebe (born June 17, 1917 in Liebenwerda ; † August 1, 2017 in Bad Liebenwerda ) was the oldest pharmacist still working in Germany during his time . He ran his pharmacy in the Brandenburg spa town of Bad Liebenwerda as a private company since 1947, even through the period of the GDR planned economy . Liebe was an honorary citizen of his hometown and an honorary doctorate from the International University of Kyrgyzstan (IUK) in Bishkek , Kyrgyzstan .

Live and act

Wolfgang Liebe was born in 1917 as the son of the pharmacist Albin Liebe and his wife Martha Liebe, b. Neimann was born in the house of the Liebenwerda pharmacy on Breiten Straße. The traditional Löwen-Apotheke , first mentioned in the Thirty Years' War , was run by Dear Father already during the Weimar Republic . Love attended the school in Liebenwerda up to the sixth grade, then the Lessing school in Kamenz , since 1925 upper secondary school . Two years later, due to a change of residence, he came to the German Oberschule in Nossen , where he passed the school leaving examination in 1936 . After that, Wolfgang Liebe spent two practical years in his father's pharmacy until he began studying pharmacy in Leipzig in 1938 after taking his pre-exam . He was released from military service during World War II due to minor heart problems. In 1941 he achieved the grade very good in the state examination . After completing the social half year in the Elsterwerda pharmacy, he received the license to practice medicine .

Back in his father's pharmacy, he took over as manager in 1945 and owner in 1947. However, he strove to study medicine , which he was approved in 1948 on the condition that his pharmacy could continue to operate. He began studying medicine at the University of Halle , where he completed the first section of the medical examination in 1951 . Liebe carried out other internships at the clinics of the Humboldt University in Berlin . There he began with a dissertation on the topic of early treatment of congenital hip dysplasia , with Professor Friedrich Loeffler as his doctoral supervisor.

Shortly before this work was completed, there were personnel problems in his pharmacy, which forced him to quit his job and ensure the economic survival of the company. It was the only pharmacy in the Cottbus district that was still privately owned . In the years that followed, Wolfgang Liebe was unable to finish his studies and dissertation. However, he managed to continue to run his pharmacy as a private company against the state interests of the GDR . Love has held the title of Pharmaceutical Council since 1972 . After the reunification , he left his father's house with his pharmacy in 1995 and moved to the Bad Liebenwerdaer Rossmarkt - his “answer to the now established market economy ”. His high medical and pharmacological knowledge as well as his way of dealing with people made him and his pharmacy known nationwide, to which a television coverage of his life that has been broadcast several times since 2009 contributed. Until his death, Liebe worked every day in his Löwen pharmacy on Rossmarkt, making him the oldest pharmacist still active in the Federal Republic of Germany at that time. Wolfgang Liebe was married, his wife died in 2005.

Quote

“My fulfillment is the pharmacy itself, it is to take a little weight off people's hearts. Peace and fulfillment allow me to achieve harmony. "

Honors

In 1972 Wolfgang Liebe was awarded the title of Pharmacist , which recognized his outstanding achievements in the immediate medical and social care of citizens in the former GDR.

Based on a resolution of the city council in May 2007, Liebe was made an honorary citizen of Bad Liebenwerda on June 17, 2007, his 90th birthday . As part of a public ceremony, Mayor Thomas Richter awarded the title of honorary citizen, with which the services of love to the city of Liebenwerda and the people who live there were honored.

In 2009, by decision of the Scientific Advisory Board of the International University of Kyrgyzstan (IUK) in Bishkek (Kyrgyzstan) , Liebe was honored with the title " Doctor honoris causa ". With the honorary award, Liebes life's work and his services in the social field were recognized and honored. The award certificate was handed over at a ceremony on July 26, 2009 by Wolfgang Eckelmann, Chairman of the Association for City Marketing and Economy Bad Liebenwerda . The association had been campaigning for an honorary doctorate to be awarded to Liebe since 2007 and, among other things, found support from Dear professional colleagues and the medical profession of Bad Liebenwerda. The Institute for Pharmacy at the University of Leipzig also praised the high level of social commitment shown by Liebe, but, like the state governments in Brandenburg and Saxony-Anhalt that were also addressed, referred to the existing university laws of the German federal states, according to which an honorary doctorate is only awarded for "special merits in science, technology, Culture and Art "is made possible and an award for" Services in the social field "is not planned. The connection to the IUK in Kyrgyzstan, founded in 1993, which is internationally oriented and into which an International School of Medicine (ISM) is integrated, was then established through contacts with university circles in Aachen and Poland .

On May 7, 2012, Wolfgang Liebe was awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany at a meeting of the district council in Falkenberg / Elster by the district administrator. With this award, the honorary commitment Liebes was honored.

A senior citizens' home in Bad Liebenwerda, which opened in October 2016, was named after Wolfgang Liebe.
