Wolfram Benda

Wolfram Benda (born September 17, 1953 in Bayreuth ) is a German literary scholar , translator , book designer and publisher . He is the editor of a large philosophical complete edition ( Anthony Ashley Cooper, 3rd Earl of Shaftesbury ). Many of the texts published by him are first prints of world literature or first translations into German.

Life

Wolfram Benda spent his school days in Bayreuth and Munich . From 1973 to 1982 he studied English, American and German literature and philosophy in Erlangen , Freiburg / Breisgau and Amherst / Massachusetts . In 1982 he received his doctorate with a dissertation on the English philosopher Anthony Ashley Cooper, 3rd Earl of Shaftesbury at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg . Since 1982 he has been working at the Institute for English and American Studies at the Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nuremberg.

Benda is an internationally recognized specialist in the work of Anthony Ashley Cooper, 3rd Earl of Shaftesbury, whose works and letters he has been publishing with colleagues at frommann-holzboog since 1979 .

This first historical-critical edition of the works and letters of the English early enlightenment, which was funded from 1982 to 2012 by the German Research Foundation (DFG), offers for the first time all of Shaftesbury's own print, as well as all posthumous works, the writings from the rich, unpublished estate, all letters received and a detailed commentary in English. As a friend and conversation partner of Locke, Bayle, Le Clerc, Leibniz and Toland, Shaftesbury (1671–1713) was part of the intellectual avant-garde of his time. His writings, which saw numerous editions and translations in the 18th century, were productively received throughout Europe : in Great Britain a. a. from Mandeville, Hutcheson, Berkeley, Butler, Harris, and Hume; in Germany by Leibniz, Oetinger, Hamann, Mendelssohn, Lessing , Wieland, Kant , Merck, Herder and Goethe ; in France by Voltaire , Diderot , who translated Shaftesbury's Inquiry concerning Virtue (Geneva 1745) into French, and Rousseau. The Standard Edition is intended to provide new material for research into European philosophy and literature of the 18th century and, through the publication of previously unknown texts and letters, make the foundation of Shaftesbury's thinking in ancient , especially stoic , traditions visible.

Already during his studies, Benda founded the private press The Bear Press in Bayreuth in 1979 , in which texts from world literature are published as bibliophile editions in limited editions. Special interest is given to lost or unpublished texts that appear in carefully edited and - if there is no classical translation such as by Wieland or Luther - specially made translations and with specially written afterwords by renowned authors or literary scholars (including Friedrich Georg Jünger , Günter Kunert , Eberhard Schlotter and Urs Widmer ; Karl Bertau , Detlef Haberland , Niklas Holzberg , Norbert Miller , Ulrich Schödlbauer and Kurt Wölfel ). All editions are produced largely by hand (typesetting, printing, paper, binding) and with specially created original prints by contemporary artists illustrating ( etching , engraving , wood engraving , woodcut , color woodcut , wood cracks, lithography , Schablithographie). These include u. a. Klaus Böttger , Uwe Bremer , Fritz Eichenberg , Klaus Ensikat , Rolf Escher , Esteban Fekete , Hans Fronius , Gottfried Helnwein , Karl-Georg Hirsch , Stephan Klenner-Otto , Peter Klitsch , Stefan Knechtel, Paul Mersmann the Younger , Rolf Münzner , Caspar Walter Rauh , Karl Rössing , Eberhard Schlotter, Hubert Sommerauer , Hanns Studer, Jan Peter Tripp , Werner Wittig and Jürgen Wölbing .

Purchases were made from public and private collections at home and abroad. His prints have been shown in various exhibitions, including a. in Bayreuth (City Library), Bamberg (State Library), Emden ( Johannes a Lasco Library ), Essen ( Folkwang Museum ), Essenheim (Kunstverein), Düsseldorf ( Heinrich Heine Institute ), Frankfurt / M. (Gutenberg Book Guild; manufactum), Hof (Kunstverein), Leipzig (House of Books), Munich (Chamber of Crafts), Münster (Picasso Museum) and Zurich. He received several awards, including a. the Austrian State Prize Several publishers created complete reprints of his books. Including the publishers Artemis-Winkler , dtv and Otto Müller .
