Yuri's Night ( German "Juris Night") is the name established by the then NASA employee George Whitesides for a u. a. by him to life caused series of events as a day of action every year around April 12 around the world on all continents, human space flight celebrated as achievement of civilization. The name is reminiscent of Yuri Gagarin , the first man in space.

Explicit reason for the choice of this date is the coincidence of dates of Columbia - the first flight in 1981 and the Vostok -Erstfluges 1961, both held on April 12 each. The number of officially registered celebrations of this kind began in 2001 with 64 and has been over 200 since 2009. In 2004, for example, people celebrated in 34 countries and in numerous places, including a. in Los Angeles , Stockholm , Antarctica , Tel Aviv , Tokyo and on the International Space Station (ISS).

content

The intention of Yuri's Night is to promote public interest in space exploration and to attract new candidates for this research within the next generation. The event idea is also based on artistic forms of expression inspired by space and ultimately leads to a worldwide network of simultaneous events with young people. A wide variety of cultural events, in particular from the fields of music, dance, fashion and art, also take place at global events.

initiative

The initiators of "Yuri's Night" include George T. Whitesides and Loretta Hidalgo . Whitesides was Executive Director at NASA from 2004 to 2008, then Chief of Staff for Administrator Charles Bolden . Today Whitesides is the CEO of Virgin Galactic . The Russian side was not involved in the initiative.

Yuri's Night has had its own 501 (c) 3 society since 2010 , after the organizational structures in the UN-supported Space Generation Advisory Council had grown.

useful information

In contrast to the assumption that has been made at times that the Yuri's Night idea has something to do with the Russian " Cosmonaut Day " proclaimed for the same date , it is based on a separate / international idea: the collapse of the first human flight into space (12 April 1961) and the first flight of an American space shuttle exactly 20 years later (April 12, 1981). This simultaneity was used by the American side as an opportunity to call for a worldwide celebration that includes all space travel nations and all space travel enthusiasts across borders, in order to jointly honor the world-historical achievement of manned space flight - without ostensible reputation of a single nation.

The 2004 event in Los Angeles was attended by over 100 prominent space researchers, including writer Ray Bradbury , space tourist Dennis Tito and Ansari X-Prize founder Peter Diamandis . Especially in the USA Yuri's Night a big event, which is at the Ames Research Center of NASA attracted already 12,000 visitors in 2010, as Spiegel Online reported. The progress made to date was presented at the International Astronautical Congress (IAC) 2013 in Beijing.
