Reviews
The majority of US critics were positive about the series. At Metacritic, the first season has a Metascore of 61/100 based on 17 reviews. According to Rotten Tomatoes , 68% of reviews were positive, with an average rating of 6.46 / 10.
Deutschlandfunk saw the series as a “shimmering portrait of a remarkable woman”. Christina Ricci shows "why men are not always the better protagonists". The series still has its weaknesses; some dialogues are "soap opera-like" and the complex characters are drawn "sometimes one-dimensional". David Hoflin works as F. Scott Fitzgerald next to the main actress "pale".
Ann-Kristin Tlusty expressed herself very critically in her criticism for the time . Like the original book, the series succumbs to “the pompous sheen of a costume ham” and only “conscientiously” works off the facts of Zelda Fitzgerald's life. On the other hand, the viewer does not learn anything about the wishes and inner workings of the main character. For fans, the “one-dimensional portrayal of one of the most influential writers of the 20th century as a choleric drinker” is particularly “disappointing”, even though David Hoflin's play is “quite multifaceted”.
Markus Ehrenberg made a similar judgment in the Tagesspiegel . Ultimately, the series uses “again male frames of reference and expectations” and is largely silent about the inner workings of the protagonist. On the other hand, Ehrenberg saw positively that “the legend of F. Scott Fitzgerald [...] is being scratched”.
