history

The name Zaina is derived from zainari : people who make something out of branches, twigs and rods. These were probably dams and protective structures against the water and to create dry arable land and to protect their houses. Zaina is mentioned for the first time in 1083 in a letter from Bishop Altmann von Passau . Zaina belonged to the Schmida reign. Around 1500 there were 25 houses in Zaina.

Due to its location in the Danube floodplains, Zaina was repeatedly threatened by floods. From 1666 to 1667 the municipality built a flood protection dam. On January 29, 1689, Zaina was completely enclosed by the water. High water marks on the barn of house no.22 show the highest water level in 1899. At that time the residents considered moving to the Butterkreuz. The Butter Cross is mentioned as early as 1726, here the traders picked up the butter from the farmers.

After the revolution of 1848 and the basic relief of the peasants in 1849/1850, the municipalities were granted an independent sphere of activity, but the obligations were also imposed to participate in public administration. Each congregation could now freely choose its leader and its representatives. So in 1850 the large community of Gaisruck was founded, to which Zaina and Perzendorf also belong. The large community is dissolved again on April 2, 1919. In 1876 the school for Zaina and Perzendorf was built. In 1923, Zaina comprised 30 houses and 165 people. In 1924 the place was electrified. After the Second World War, the village was repeatedly looted by members of the Red Army. Ignaz Schiefer was shot and Johann Weinberger was shot on the night of July 14-15, 1945. Today a memorial cross commemorates that terrible night.

In October 1948 the Zaina volunteer fire brigade was founded. On June 25, 1952, a fire broke out in the former mill - then a factory for metal goods - and the damage amounted to over 1 million schillings. On June 30, 1967, the school in Zaina was closed. In 1970 and 1971 the pond was dredged where there used to be a brick kiln.

On January 1, 1971, Zaina was incorporated as a cadastral community of the newly created large community of Hausleiten. The first mayor was Leopold Pucher. In 1976 the place was connected to the automatic telephone network.
