Company history

The company was founded in 1902 by the learned pharmacist Waldemar Zeisner in Bremen near the main train station located Philosophers founded. The company founder valued the English Worcester sauce , which he initially imported and traded with. At the same time, together with his wife Juliane Zeisner, he developed their own variant of the liquid wort , which became the first product of the Zeisner company. Advertised in the 1920s as "German Spice Sauce", it is still produced almost unchanged today and is now available as "Worcestershire Sauce".

Georg Zeisner, the son of the company founder, experimented with other seasoning sauces and then mixed Germany's first tomato ketchup in 1937 . This spicy sauce made on the basis of tomato paste , which had been widespread in England since the middle of the 18th century and in the USA since the middle of the 19th century, was still considered a culinary specialty in Germany at that time and was only available in specialty shops there since the beginning of the 20th century Imports available. At that time, ketchup was "not used as a sauce, but as a condiment to round off dishes".

That changed in the 1950s when Günther Zeisner (1934–2016) became the third generation to take over the company. After ketchup had become more widely known in Germany after 1945, initially through the British and American occupation soldiers, the demand rose “by leaps and bounds” in the 1950s with the advent of fast food, and Günther Zeisner and his wife Ursula Zeisner continued to expand the business with annual production growth . Because of the odor nuisance occurring during production, the company location was relocated from downtown Bremen to the outlying community of Grasberg in 1967. The company operated under the name Zeisner & Co.

In 1995 the great-grandson of the company founder and son of Günther Zeisner, the businessman Thomas Zeisner, joined the management team. Zeisner Feinkost GmbH & Co. KG is now managed by Thomas Zeisner in the fourth generation. The company is entered in the commercial register of the Walsrode Local Court .
