Civil Courage is a German television film by Dror Zahavi . Götz George plays the main role . The first broadcast on the first was on January 27, 2010.

action

Peter Jordan, an old 68er and owner of a small antiquarian bookshop in Berlin-Kreuzberg , gets into conflict with a gang and his conscience. As a witness to an act of violence, he changes from a believing supporter of the rule of law to a defender of his own rights when he feels increasingly threatened and no longer adequately protected by the police. For this reason, he gets a gun to protect himself and his daughter.

The perpetrator's girlfriend, Jessica Lorenz, happened to be doing an internship at Peter Jordan's second-hand bookshop at the same time. If she does not want to be expelled from school, she has to successfully finish this project week, and so comes between the fronts: On one side is her friend, an immigrant who was reported by Peter Jordan and who is threatened with prison as a repeat offender, on the other hand, the old bookseller, on whom she depends as an employer during the project week.

The film contrasts the different milieus that live next to each other on the same street in Berlin-Kreuzberg . A growing group of people with foreign roots there have one or more of the characteristics such as unemployment / employment in the low-wage sector, low level of education, lack of prospects and a migration background. On the other hand, Peter Jordan is someone who maintains something like an educated middle class island and defends it with bars in front of his windows. But towards the end he has the bars removed from the windows to open himself up to the world and to show that he will not let the violence that reigns in his neighborhood get down.

The situation of the police, which is characterized by a lack of personnel, is critically examined, as a result of which citizens are able to believe that they have to use armed force to protect themselves from violent gangs.

production

The film was produced by Colonia Media Filmproduktions GmbH for WDR and shot from June 23 to July 24, 2009 in Berlin and the surrounding area.

Reviews

"Exciting, powerful and straightforwardly staged (television) drama that addresses the subject of 'moral courage' beyond the usual black and white drawings and precisely captures the milieu, scene and atmosphere of the conflict-ridden district."

Civil courage is a contribution to the socio-political, cultural and moral situation of the nation. A film that raises questions and is reminiscent of the Dominik Brunner case . But moral courage is also an aesthetically atmospheric film that takes its subject and the way it is presented equally seriously. Zahavi's Berlin Kreuzberg looks like Scorsese's Bronx. "
