background

Kollegah started recording rap music in 2004. He was initially active on the Internet platform Reimliga Battle Arena . In fourteen so-called "battles", in which two opponents record a rap verse over a given beat and attack each other in the style of battle rap , Kollegah was declared the winner in eleven battles. In 2005 he recorded the pimp tape and posted it on the internet for free. As a result, various record companies became aware of him. Slick One, founder of the Selfmade Records label , finally signed Kollegah. This commented on his contract signing: “ The best label for the best rapper: A simple law of logic. Selfmade Records decided to re-release the pimp tape commercially under the title Pimp Tape X-Mas Edition . The mixtape was released on December 22nd, 2005. Kollegah recorded five more tracks (Chinatown, Kaputtmachen, Straße, Bossrapper, Psychedelik) and a new intro for the CD release . In addition, contributions from three guest rappers for the mixtape and the productions of the songs, for which the hip-hop musicians Rizbo , Six June & Yoshi Noize and Paul Supreme were responsible, were revised.

Beats and Production

Most of the beats used, which is the genre-specific, rhythmic background music, can be assigned to various American hip-hop artists. On the later publish "X-Mas Edition" but also exclusive Beats produced for Kollegah can be found, with the majority of these productions of Six June comes, which for the background music of the pieces intro, Boss rapper, the new edition of Temple Balls and psychedelia responsible is. House Producer Rizbo of Self Made Records was responsible for the title made Kaputt while Kevoe West the beat for Angeberprollrap Freestyle contributed. The beats of the tracks Chinatown and Straße were produced by Paul Supreme, who was also able to accommodate some beats on Kollegah's album Boss der Bosse .

criticism

Hip-Hop.de praised the mixtape and awarded five out of six evaluation points. Kollegah did not deviate from his concept of “ punchlines about violence, weapons, hookers and drugs ” for the entire duration of the game . In addition to the misogynistic and violence-glorifying statements that are usual for gangster rap, Kollegah and Mr. Chissmann also present racism, which in the opinion of the editor is "going too far, especially from a rap perspective ". Apart from that, Kollegah is praised for its " extraordinary vocabulary ", its triple rhymes, stanzas and comparisons performed in so-called double time. The numerous word games and comparisons based on ambiguous words ensure that the listener can play the publication several times and always discover new word games. Instead, pieces with specific topics are missing. Another negative mention is that Kollegah only varies the rhythm of his lecture slightly, but otherwise sounds the same on every song. The beats of the mixtape are praised, while the guest contributions of befriended rappers are less convincing. In a summary, the editor explains: “ Even if you can always only identify classics in retrospect, the pimp tape seems to belong in this category - but only if you use the right yardstick. When it comes to morality and authenticity, one can argue about Kollegah. As far as rap technique and punchlines are concerned, however, not. "

In a review by the Rap4Fame.de website, the mixtape was awarded three and a half of a possible five evaluation points. The editor Michael particularly praises Kollegah's comparisons and the style of his presentation. Showtime is highlighted as a “ highlight ”, partly because of the parts of the text that are performed in double time . On the other hand, Redlight District Soundtrack is boring and Kuck auf die Goldkette is characterized by an undemanding hookline . Lovesong is another highlight. The editor criticizes the beats as a general problem. For example, the background music spoils the song Wersderboss . However, the production of the piece Z-Files is rated positively. Temple Balls is the best title, which is mainly due to the numerous entertaining comparisons. In the final evaluation, the editor explains that, in terms of textual comparisons and presentations, there is “ hardly anything comparable ” to be heard in Germany .
