The nature reserve surcharge located in the city of Rahden in the Minden-Lübbecke . It is around 42.6  hectares and is listed under the designation MI-062.

It is located east of Rahden and Espelkamp in the Tonheide district between the state roads 765, 770 and 802 west of the state border with Lower Saxony near the Osterwald nature reserve .

The protection was placed in order to preserve the communities of rare and endangered animal and plant species in the area of ​​the nature reserve. The acidic oak forests are particularly worth protecting . Near-natural pond and natural grave sections, with their marshes, reed beds , sedge and Hochstaudenfluren refuges for numerous plants and animals.

The nature reserve is shown in the state development plan of North Rhine-Westphalia and in the area development plan (sub-section Upper Bielefeld) as an area of ​​national importance for the biotope network . It is designated as an FFH area ( Natura 2000 no. DE-3518-302). Particularly noteworthy are the occurrences of the middle woodpecker , the black woodpecker , the red kite and the oriole .
