The Osterwald nature reserve is located in the town of Espelkamp in the Minden-Lübbecke district . It is around 74.5  hectares and is listed under the designation MI-061.

It is located in the east of the village of Schmalge on both sides of the state road 770 and west of the state road 771 near the nature reserve supplement .

The protection was placed in order to preserve the communities of rare and endangered animal and plant species in the area of ​​the Osterwald. The acidic oak forests and the pedunculate oak - hornbeam forests are particularly worth protecting . Near-natural pond and natural grave sections, with their marshes, reed beds , sedge and Hochstaudenfluren refuges for numerous plants and animals. In addition, existing amphibious trails must be secured.

The nature reserve is shown in the state development plan of North Rhine-Westphalia and in the area development plan (sub-section Upper Bielefeld) as an area of ​​national importance for the biotope network . It is designated as an FFH area Osterwald ( Natura 2000 no. DE-3518-302). Particularly noteworthy are the occurrences of the middle woodpecker , the black woodpecker , the red kite and the oriole .
