The Stiftholz nature reserve is located in the East Westphalian municipality of Stemwede in the Minden-Lübbecke district . It is around 12.4 hectares in size and has the official registration number MI-070. The designation as a nature reserve took place on September 3, 2009.
location
The area is located in the center of Stemwede on the northwestern edge of the Niedermehnen district . It lies on the edge of the valley of the Great Dieck River in the natural area of the Rahden-Diepenauer Geest . The district of Westrup borders north of the Great Dieck River . The area is part of the Dümmer Nature Park .
description
A former clay excavation area , which is partly surrounded by young field trees, forms the core area. This is of great ecological importance. The central area is in turn surrounded by meadows with smaller standing still waters . In addition, there is a larger pond with reeds in the western part and a near-natural field wood in the south of the protected area.
meaning
The nature reserve is of considerable relevance in the regional biotope network . It represents an important refuge for a large number of endangered and highly endangered plant species and has a high structural and species richness . Around 130 different plant species have been identified. Several thousand orchids bloom in the area . The areas are of outstanding value, especially from the perspective of floristry and vegetation studies .
The former clay excavation area in the inner area today has diverse habitats with particularly valuable vegetation . On the basically nutrient-poor substrate , near-natural still waters, reeds, broken bushes and young broken forest with intermediate moor and marsh grass meadows could develop. Individual pipe grass meadows are home to a large number of plant species, some of which are endangered. Among other things, there are occurrences of lung gentian and spotted orchid . In the area of the intermediate moor, the pronounced peat moss covers are overgrown with species typical of this biotope, including narrow-leaved cottongrass , scabbard cottongrass , swamp fern and swamp blood-eye .
Care and development
Regular maintenance and development measures are necessary in order to regulate the unwanted succession in the area and thus in particular to maintain and optimize the sensitive habitats of the intermediate moor and the marsh grass meadows. An encroachment of open land habitats and shading the water is counteracted by woods withdrawals. The surrounding grassland is cultivated extensively and is intended to prevent possible nutrient input.
