The 2008 New York Mets season is the franchise's 47th season. It is the Mets' final year at Shea Stadium. They will move to Citi Field in 2009.

Offseason

On January 29, 2008, the Mets and the Minnesota Twins agreed to a deal which involves the Mets trading four minor league prospects in exchange for two time Cy Young Award winning pitcher Johan Santana[1]. He agreed on a contract extension on February 1, 2008 worth $137.5 million, (with a $7MM signing bonus) over the course of six years. The contract also gives Johan a player option and a team option for 2014, which can be reached by consecutive high finishes by year in the Cy Young voting or innings pitched over the course of the contract. The option in 2014 comes with a 5.5MM buyout. The year by year salary is: 2008: $19M, 2009: $20M, 2010: $21M, 2011: $22.5M, 2012: $24M, 2013: $25.5M, 2014(option): $25M, with a $5.5M buyout. Overall, it is considered by owner Jeff Wilpon and General Manager Omar Minaya as one of the most significant moves in the franchise's history[original research?].
