(2751) Campbell ( 1962 RP ; 1973 RD ; 1975 EO 2 ; 1977 RN 6 ; 1981 WF 4 ) is an approximately seven kilometer asteroid of the inner main belt that was created on September 7, 1962 as part of the Indiana Asteroid Program at the Goethe-Link -Observatory in Brooklyn , Indiana ( IAU code 760) was discovered. A total of 119 asteroids were discovered by the Indiana Asteroid Program. It belongs to the Hertha family , a group of asteroids named after (135) Hertha .
designation
(2751) Campbell was named after the American astronomer William Wallace Campbell (1862–1938), director of the Lick Observatory (IAU code 662) from 1901 to 1930, president of the University of California from 1923 to 1930, president of the International Astronomical Union from 1922 to 1925 and President of the National Academy of Sciences from 1931 to 1935. He pioneered the planning, organization and implementation of the first large-scale systematic program for measuring the radial velocities of stars . The name was suggested by the American astronomer Frank K. Edmondson . The lunar crater Campbell and the Martian crater Campbell are also named after him.
