(3298) Massandra is an asteroid of the main inner belt , which was discovered by the Soviet astronomer Nikolai Tschernych on July 21, 1979 at the Crimean Observatory in Nauchnyj ( IAU code 095). There had been some observations of the asteroid before: almost simultaneously on July 6, 1950 under the provisional name 1950 NE at the Union Observatory in Johannesburg and four days later (1950 NE ) at the Goethe Link Observatory in Indiana , on September 7 1972 (1972 RT) at the Crimean Observatory in Nautschnyj and on November 1 and 6, 1983 (1983 VC) at the Japanese Geisei Observatory .
The mean diameter of the asteroid was determined to be 11.16 km (± 1.6). With an albedo of 0.0565 (± 0.020) it has a rather dark surface. According to the SMASS classification ( Small Main-Belt Asteroid Spectroscopic Survey ), a spectroscopic investigation by Gianluca Masi , Sergio Foglia and Richard P. Binzel at (5107) Laurenbacall also assumed a dark surface, so it could roughly be be a C asteroid .
The Italian astronomer Vincenzo Zappalà used a hierarchical cluster analysis in a publication from 1995 (et al.) To extrapolate the asteroid's membership of the Nysa family, a group of asteroids named after (44) Nysa . The group is also called the Hertha family, after (135) Hertha .
(3298) Massandra was named on February 6, 1993 after Massandra , a suburb of the spa and vacation resort Yalta , which is known for its winery .
