(38442) Szilárd is an asteroid of the main outer belt that was discovered on September 24, 1999 by the Hungarian amateur astronomer Krisztián Sárneczky and the Hungarian astronomer Gyula M. Szabó at the Piszkéstető observatory ( IAU code 461) in the northern Hungarian Mátra Mountains on behalf of the university of the sciences Szeged was discovered.

The mean diameter of the asteroid was calculated to be 4.617 km (± 0.357) and the albedo to be 0.208 (± 0.069).

The asteroid is a member of the Koronis family, a group of asteroids named after (158) Koronis . According to the SMASS classification ( Small Main-Belt Asteroid Spectroscopic Survey ), a spectroscopic study by Gianluca Masi , Sergio Foglia and Richard P. Binzel at (38442) Szilárd assumed a bright surface, so it could, roughly speaking, be around trade an S asteroid .

The ageless (not osculating ) orbital elements of (38442) Sizlárd are almost identical with those of five smaller asteroids, when one of the absolute brightness of 15.0, 14.4, 14.7, 15.6 and 15.4 compared to 14 , 0 assumes: (40783) 1999 TT 28 , (50896) 2000 GS 43 , (59935) 1999 RR 187 , (198605) 2005 AM 19 and (208140) 2000 EJ 34 .

(38442) Szilárd was named on July 30, 2007 after the Hungarian -US nuclear physicist and molecular biologist Leó Szilárd . A lunar crater in the northern lunar hemisphere was named after Leo Szilárd in 1970 : lunar crater Szilard .
