(5537) Sanya is an asteroid of the main inner belt . It was discovered on October 9, 1964 at the Observatory on Purple Mountain ( IAU code 330) in Nanjing .

The mean diameter of the asteroid was calculated to be 3.870 km (± 0.187). With an albedo of 0.470 (± 0.079) it has a very light surface. The rotation period of (5537) Sanya was published in 2015 by Adam Waszczak, Chan-Kao Chang, Eran Ofek et al. examined. However, the light curve was not sufficient for a determination.

The Italian astronomer Vincenzo Zappalà defines in a publication from 1995 (et al. ) That (5537) Sanya belongs to an asteroid family , in which (5300) Sats is given as the largest asteroid of this group. The mean distance to the Sun ( major semiaxis ), eccentricity, and inclination of the orbital plane of (5537) Sanya roughly resemble the orbital data of members of the Flora family, a large group of asteroids named after (8) Flora . Asteroids of this family move in a 4: 9 orbital resonance with the planet Mars around the sun . The group is also called the Ariadne family, after the asteroid (43) Ariadne .

(5537) Sanya was named after Sanya on July 22, 2013 , a vacation spot in the south of the Chinese island of Hainan . On September 15, 1989, an asteroid also discovered at the observatory on the purple mountain was named after Hainan, but after the newly formed province of Hainan : (3024) Hainan .
