(6258) Rodin is an asteroid of the inner main belt , which was discovered on September 30, 1973 by the Dutch astronomer couple Cornelis Johannes van Houten and Ingrid van Houten-Groeneveld . The discovery was made during the 2nd Trojan survey, during which Tom Gehrels surveyed field plates recorded with the 120 cm Oschin Schmidt telescope of the Palomar observatory at the University of Leiden , 13 years after the start of the Palomar-Leiden- Surveys .
The Italian astronomer Vincenzo Zappalà defined in a publication from 1995 (et al.) That (6258) Rodin belonged to the Flora family, a large group of asteroids named after (8) Flora . Asteroids of this family move in a 4: 9 orbital resonance with the planet Mars around the sun . The group is also called the Ariadne family, after the asteroid (43) Ariadne .
The mean diameter of the asteroid was calculated to be 4.003 (± 0.153) kilometers and the albedo to be 0.400 (± 0.068).
(6258) Rodin was named on March 5, 1996 after the French sculptor Auguste Rodin (1840-1917). His works The Citizens of Calais (1889), The Kiss (1886) and The Thinker (1880) were particularly emphasized in the dedication . An impact crater on the northern hemisphere of the planet Mercury was named after Rodin in 1976 : Mercury crater Rodin .
