(6273) Kiruna is an asteroid of the main inner belt . It was discovered on March 2, 1992 during the Uppsala-ESO Surveys of Asteroids and Comets at the La Silla Observatory of the European Southern Observatory in Chile ( IAU code 809). There had been several sightings of the asteroid before, for example on October 13, 1963 under the provisional designation 1963 TA at the Goethe Link Observatory in Indiana , on February 14, 1988 (1988 CZ 5 ) at the La Silla Observatory and on September 14, 1990 (1990 RV 10 ) at the Palomar Observatory in California

The mean diameter of the asteroid was calculated to be 6.877 (± 0.045) km , with an albedo of 0.035 (± 0.010) it has a very dark surface. The solar orbit of (6273) Kiruna is strongly elliptical with an eccentricity of 0.2476 .

According to the SMASS classification ( Small Main-Belt Asteroid Spectroscopic Survey ), a spectroscopic study by Gianluca Masi , Sergio Foglia and Richard P. Binzel subdivided all investigated asteroids into C, S and V types (6273) Kiruna assigned to the C asteroids .

(6273) Kiruna was named after the northern Swedish city of Kiruna on September 28, 1999 .
